When a child’s emotional needs are not met and a child is repeatedly hurt and abused, this deeply and profoundly affects the child’s development. Wanting those unmet childhood needs in adulthood. Looking for safety, protection, being cherished and loved can often be normal unmet needs in childhood, and the survivor searches for these in other adults. This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors. |

OK, I'm trying it for the first time, and it is kinda fun.

I haven't tried it and am wondering what the payoff is for facebook or why it's required to sign in using FB which is basically a marketing platform.

I don't like the fact Facebook store your data. I wonder whether they use what you tell the bot for targeted advertising.

Sorry Ruh Roh, just read up the thread and realised you had the same suspicion.

I don’t think conversations with Woebot are of such a nature that they easily lend themselves to ad mining. They’re short and largely in emoji or “I’m sorry you feel that way.” It’s not like you’re telling Woebot how much you crave a Louis Vuitton bag, or Woebot is pushing things like spa visits.
Conversations and clicking on pictures right here on PC are far more likely to trigger targeted advertising—for instance, I get ads, on Facebook and other sites, for adult onesies. ![]() |

I use private browsing because I hated getting ads here on pc that were based on sites I visited. I don't think it's impossible to think that there's a marketing aspect to woebot...there are a lot of products aimed at emotional states. Art--let us know if you get ads for grad programs in psychology.

I turned off private browsing for something and within a day I had ads on facebook for Van der Kolk lectures or some such crap about trauma recovery.

So, who wants to talk Woebot’s ear off about their hitherto unknown passion for, I dunno, curling or cricket or some such? |

One thing would be to look for ads about the music woebot suggests, or products related to moods or emotions shared with woebot.

Not that I'm aware of. I'll have to pay more attention.

O m g. I asked him if hot air ballooning would be a good way to forget and he said he admired my ability to reflect and be honest. Ex t said almost the exact phrase in her last email reply. What is going on here?!

The timing is freaky though eh?

No, because it's only the proximity of the events that makes you think it's freaky. Like when you open your email thinking "I'll hear from x, I just have a feeling," it's confirmed when you do hear from X, but you have opened your email many times hoping to hear from X, only not to hear from X, and your mind deletes that data. Or like when you read something about Fred Astaire and the next day someone else mentions him. You've read plenty of things about Fred Astaire and heard him mentioned plenty of times, just not in such close proximity.

Maybe your ex-therapist is actually a woebot, art.

You’re not alone, Art — current T is big on emojis + “I’m sorry you’re feeling this way”.

So far I enjoyed Woebot but he surprised me today by being quite sharp. He wanted to talk about sleep and was rather strict saying things like "you must buy 3 alarm clocks today" (yes, he really used the word must twice) and "I'm not a bot who will give you wellness tips all the time" etc... Whole "conversation" I felt like I was being scolded by a PE teacher or something like that.
I never react well to this kind of "tough love" and it was surprising as the bot was so friendly and funny until now. What's more, it had no connection to what I struggle with... I go to bed early and I wake up early, my issue is waking up at night. |
