I always wear jeans and the same hoodie with trainers. Near the beginning she commented when i changed my jumper as had to replace it. I think she thinks im mad cos even when its hot i still wear my jeans hoodie and trainers then i go home after to get changed into something cooler. Same for winter i walk there but have never worn a coat. I dont know why i do it just a comfort thing
Thanks for this!

When I first was going to my therapist I was coming in the middle of my workday. I wore suits mainly and dresses and heels and makeup. And I was hyped up from work. Since I quit work I wear jeans and a decent top every session, no makeup, plus I'm not in as good a physical shape as I was. I always wonder if he's disappointed that I'm no longer the client he took on. But I knew he cared about me so maybe that was my own deal.

I don't think a therapist should be commenting on your clothes any more than they should comment on your looks. They're making a judgement about you which could affect your therapy.
Thanks for this!

I did the exact same thing! All summer I wore leggings and a hoodie to sessions and would go change afterwards, and I've never taken my jacket inside with me and simply put up with the cold until I got there. I don't know why I do it, it would be almost weirder for me to NOT have a jacket or to be wearing pants and a sweater but for some reason I wear the same thing.... every time lol

Comfy clothes and decent socks
I always kick off my shoes and like to pull my legs up and sit crosslegged or holding my legs on his sofa
I tend to act kind of young/small in his office
Thanks for this!

I have shown up at T’s office in all manner of dress. It just depends what has happened before or will be happening after my appointment. I have shown up in dresses, skirts, khakis, jeans, dress pants, yoga pants, sweatshirts, blouses, cardigans, etc. I love all of my clothes and I feel good in them so I think this has a positive influence on my therapy.

Wow thank you for all of these replies! Interesting that for some of us what we wear to T is really important, while others hardly take notice.

I was actually thinking about this because last session I wore a really low-cut shirt, and a very shameful topic related to sex just HAD to come up on that day. I felt super vulnerable and exposed discussing it in that shirt and wanted to put my coat back on, but didn’t want to look weird so I didn’t. My t is male btw.

Since it’s winter I usually wear leggings/skinny jeans and a sweatshirt or baggy top. Regardless of if I’m dressed cute or not though, I always do my makeup for therapy, even if I didn’t have it done for the day already (which is embarrassing to admit). I guess it helps me feel more confident and I’m control of things. I do not always do my hair, but more often than not I do.

Always jeans and either a t shirt or some sort of casual pull over top. I have a zillion pair of tennis shoes so I will pick a pair.. and light make up.. and always my Angel by Thierry Mugler : )

Gosh, I must look like a bum to my T compared to some of you. Although I can't imagine wearing my pajamas to therapy, I'm otherwise pretty low-key. When I was working, it was business casual stuff. Mostly dresses with some khaki and top combos. Now that I'm just a student, I wear whatever is comfortable. When it's hot, I tend to wear a pair of my preferred Nike Tempo shorts and a t-shirt, and always bring a hoodie. In cooler weather, jeans or sweats and a t-shirt, plus hoodie. I might wear leggings and a dress if I run out of other clean clothes.

I never do my makeup unless there's something unsightly, like a zit. Then I just dab some concealer on the spot and go. I try to make sure my hair isn't too crazy, make sure I have my chapstick so that I'm comfortable (I hate the feeling of dry lips!), and that's it.

Oh, and I don't think my T would care what I wear unless it was filthy and/or smelly. She might notice if I suddenly started wearing "real" clothes, I guess. If it wasn't for the fact that I intentionally always have a hoody or light jacket with me, she might think I was trying to hide SH.

Usually a casual dress, or blouse and skirt or pants. What I normally wear.

I used to come from work too and I would be wearing a suit and heels (I work at the state capitol) and I felt ridiculous coming into my university clinic, lol!

Its good to finally meet someone like me with this. Ive been seeing t for 2 years now do i dont think things will change. Just the thought of wearing a coat or going in without my hoodie on makes me feel so anxious. I also cant drive there so i park in the local supermarket and walk for 10 mins due to her driveway being full just after i started seeing her and it stressed me out

This is interesting. I often find myself in a total panic about what to wear, I care so much about what she thinks of me but in reality I know she probably doesn't even notice. I have to make sure I don't wear the same thing as I've worn the week before, or even the few previous weeks (I do this in all situations in life though) I can agonise all day about what to wear. If I'm feeling particularly vulnerable, especially around body stuff, I make sure I'm wearing something big and baggy to hide in. I have several jumpers that I've totally unravelled the sleeves on because I pick and fiddle so much during the session.

We have never discussed this but I think pants of some sort are a MUST for me to wear.
I almost always see my therapist in the middle of a work day, so I wear a button up dress shirt and jeans, if it's good enough for my boss I'm sure it's good enough for therapy.
