Has anybody had their session taped on camera?

When I first started coming, I saw a camera up high. He said he tapes some sessions but he knew better than to ask me........ he's rather wise

Hell no. I would never consent to that.

Interestingly enough, I was reading a book about the workings of psychotherapy. The book noted that some therapist's audio record their sessions with clients without knowledge so they don't have to take notes. That freaked me out until I discovered the book was written in 1991. That can't be legal for a t to do nowadays, right?
Thanks for this!

Depends on the purpose. I was told if we did hypnotherapy, shed record it. If there were a certain reason, why not.

I don't think I would be ok with video recording. I would be ok with voice recording if I was ok with how it would be used.

My T used to video record my EMDR sessions because he needed so many recorded hours for certification. He asked me to sign a waiver if I consented (which I was fine with) and he asked verbal consent again each session. He said I could withdraw consent at any time. I was actually happy because I knew he would be reviewing my sessions in supervision and improving his skills while getting the best advise. For me this was very helpful as I am a difficult case due to my DID and extreme flat affect.

Oh wow. That's really scary to me... I would feel very violated if a T video taped me without asking me. It's creepy, and it feels invasive. No, I would not agree to that.

But, it sounds like your T asks clients (since you said he knew better than to ask you)? So, it's not hidden... which is better. I still wouldn't agree, personally, but I have issues with privacy and therapy.

Audio recording... I sort of feel the same way. Unless it's for a specific reason, and you're given a chance to consent/opt out, I don't think I'd support it. But, I can see how it could be a useful tool (if you consent).
Thanks for this!

[Can't find the post I'm responding to. Sorry.]

Yes, I was wondering that too. In my state you can record with only one party's knowledge. Do you think that applies to video too? In the psych hospital I watched the nurses rewind a tape of a patient in the common room and watch it. I had a job where my eventual boss told me they had all listened to the interview tapes.

I would never want a therapist or any doctor for that matter--but especially a therapist--recording me. It seems like an abuse of power to me.

Saw a T several times & discovered she had cameras in waiting room & in sessions. Found out when contacted by licensing people asking if I knew & consented. Her license was suspended. I, of course, left.

Never in a million years would I consent to my sessions being taped. How does that even work? How can you protect a client's confidentiality?
Thanks for this!

My T made a joke that did I want to see his recording of a session about my ex husband. I looked around the room in alarm and half-laughed. I so so hope he is not recording without asking. The joke threw me off, even though in general I think my T is witty and clever and enjoy joking around with him.

No, I don't think I would consent to be video taped or audio recorded. I'm usually pretty OK with most things, but that would just feel... I dunno... weird.

I never had that, that would creep me out. Did you have to sign something to allow him to do that? I would think you would have to legally. Do you watch the sessions ever or is it just for him?

Yeah, it's common practice for ISTDP therapists to record their sessions for training purposes. There is literally no way to train new therapists in that technique without videotaping sessions. My therapist only tapes the first few sessions with a client. I'm sure I could have refused, but I didn't care. Plus, I'm all for training and education for new therapists.

My T video recording one session. It was for evaluation of her as she was doing some further training. She got my consent and assured me it was only for her supervisors viewing. The camera was behind me and focused on her so that helped.

I wouldn’t like to be video taped regularly. Audio would be a different story, would be nice to help remember what we talked about.

Are you asking me?

No, he has only done it with other clents in some of their sessions. I feel defective about my looks. He couldnt pay me enough to tape me

They have sometimes - they asked and I would consent as long as I was out of sight. So a viewer would be able to listen and, if a whiteboard was used, watch the whiteboard (and T writing on it), but not me.
