I have been with my T for 2 years and we have doing CBT, which has not been successful. Over the past 2 years, my anxiety has reached astronomical heights and I am at a level of great dysfunction. I suffer from GAD, OCD, PTSD and depression.

Recently, my T suggested DBT therapy. He said I would be seeing a DBT therapist once a week and going to a DBT skills group for an hour once a week. He said such treatments are 7 months to a year. That's pretty much all the information he had.

Has anyone been through DBT or is in DBT? What is it like? It's listed as a treatment for BPD, but does it work for severe anxiety disorders? Has it helped you?

DBT helps a lot of disorders; not just BPD. The full programs last a long time. Some are modified programs that aren't as long... maybe a couple months. And then there's some group therapies where it's not class like, but it does teach you the skills. And finally, there are Ts who simply use DBT skills as part of their therapy. I have done all except the full program. I found that the skills do help. I liked it a lot better than CBT.

My therapist does EMDR mixed in with talk therapy CBT and DBT. I also go to a DBT class that last for 2 hours once a week I will probably be in the class for six months to a year. I do not have BPD but I do have huge problems with dealing with emotions plus PTSD and depression. At least one woman in my class has extreme anxiety over everything. I think DBT is helpful for all of that. Personally I like it better than CBT as well. I would definitely give it a try teaches you a lot of skills especially calming skills through the mindfulness and emotional regulation parts.
