I can only imagine how hard it is to have the insurance run out at a time like this. Talk to her, see if she'll do some pro-bono work or work on a sliding scale with you...
I hope it all works out |

Dustin, I am so sorry. When I was 17 and seeing a T the same thing happened to me. We worked out an out-of-pocket fee. My parents split it with me. There are ways to work though this. The first thing you need to do is just call your T (which I think you mentioned you did already) and try to work this out with her. There are some instances in which a request for more visits can be made. I know that happened once in my case. Again, there are ways in which this can be worked out. Suppose her out-of-pocket fee is too expensive or she is not flexible enough for it to affordable-- maybe you can see her every other week until you can get more visits. It will renew in 2008, right? That's not so far away. See if you can make it work until then. Anytime you want to talk, I am here for you.
![]() ![]() BTW: My situation was identical to yours-- I also was not aware that I ran out of visits until way after the fact. I ended up owing a rather large sum of money. My T at the time was very flexible about this and I gave her a small portion of balance each week until it was paid off. |

I'll never forget the look on my pdoc's face when I walked in and announced "I'm cured".
After his eyes returned their normal size and he picked his jaw off the floor he said the "I" word. I replied 'Yes isn't it amazing I pay you the big bucks and for the price of a postage stamp the insurance company denies my claim. I have to assume I'm cured." I doubt your T will see you for free but you can probably pay a reduced fee. Remember the insurance company does not pay the T what is billed to them. I wish you luck.

Hey! Don't give up.
My T is out of network for my health insurance and they STILL PAY FOR HALF OF IT! I go 3x a week...$150 a pop but they pay for half! Even though I have exceeded my visits. I have HealthNet. Good luck. |

Stupid insurnace companies, I don't have to deal with them in my country but I keep hearing these horror stories about them.
But as pink said - do your benefits reset at the start of next year? that's not to far away. You did the right thing, calling her and wanting to talk about it. Don't expect her to see you for free, she can't and it has nothing to do with her liking/not liking you but as others have said some work on sliding scales or let you pay off slowly. Before getting all upset, just calm down and speak to her first and see what she says. Good Luck |

All insurance company decisions can be appealed. Appeal their decision. One reason for an appeal could be that you have had to change therapists several times this year.
I hope you can work out something with your T so you can keep going. If she bills the insurance company it's likely she already knows and might be appealing the decision or submitting documentation for why additional visits are needed. So, wait to talk to her about it too. |

Hi Moonkin, I'm so sorry this has happened to you. I hope you and your T can work together to find a solution. Do your parents understand how important therapy is to you and how much it is helping? Can you contribute some of your money toward the out of pocket cost? (I don't know how old you are, so sorry if this is completely not possible!) Maybe, as others have suggested, your reset date is just around the corner (January 1). One thing that is interesting is that for both my husband and my insurance plans, from completely different companies, for 2008, our number of mental health outpatient visits increased dramatically. My husband's was 12 visits per year and mine was 20, and they both went up to 50! maybe this will be true for your plan also. (Even so, my insurance won't pay a cent for my T, but that's another sad story...) Good luck sorting this out! If you are a minor, I think your parents should be involved in any financial discussions with you and your T.
