I've noticed that many of those who responded to my last post were aspiring psychologists or at least something to that effect. So now my question is whether or not one can become a psychologist if, in the course of therapy, another need arises such as antidepressants or a medication to help with anxiety....(assuming that such a need would not affect ability to help others). Personally, I think it would be more humbling than anything (as it would promote acceptance of the fact that sometimes more than words are needed), but is there any sort of legal boundary?

There is no legal boundary. Many therapists who have mental health issues need their meds in order to help them remain stable so that they can help their patients in the most optimal way. Like I said I am currently a therapist intern. I take Lithium and Klonopin. There have been many times in which I have taken a Klonopin right before starting my day and running group therapy-- it does not impair my ability to work at all. I do have anxiety issues and it helps me to stay calm and focus on the patients, rather than my own anxiety problems. |

I'd much rather have a therapist who seeks help and medication and recognises they are having problems. It's the ones who think they are fine and nothing could affect their mental health who I'd be worried about.

Therapists aren't different kinds of people from anyone else! It's a "job" and some do it well and some not so well, etc.; if you're good at being a therapist, nothing in the rest of your world/life is going to be a problem there, it's like any other job in that respect. It's about the relationship and if you're good at establishing relationships and helping people it won't matter if you have two heads or a purple tongue! :-)

Oh well, at least I know now that I won't have any trouble drumming up business when I open my own practice someday. I will advertise as a two-headed-purple-tongued therapist and people will at least have to come and look. |

Aren't we ALL aspiring psychologists? Maybe not. Actually, I got enough of that trying to solve all the family's problems when I was a wee child. I failed at the job.
