Did anyone ever start a thread and then not dare to go back to it?
I've got three of those going right now.

Any idea why the Greeks are Danaos and not Helenes?

If I ever write an opera, there is going to be a Donna Ferentez in it.

It fits the meter in the line, while Graecos does not.

I don’t think the Romans ever used Hellenes for Greeks in Latin.

I would see that opera.

Thanks QM, whisper, Cake and Butterfly.

I got through it by being in 'professional Lost' mode.

Then tried to let a fly out of the car on the way home and ended up opening the passenger door instead of the window, whilst moving...yay!

morning, couch! i'm wondering if i have an ear problem... after swimming yesterday, i used my swim ear drops (i've used them for many years, they supposedly dry up the water so you don't get 'swimmer's ear' infections) but this morning it feels like half of my head is stuffed with cotton and my hearing is kinda muffled in that ear. Guess I'll be calling the dr tomorrow... actually i'm hoping that being up and walking around today will somehow fix it....

hugs and headnods around as appropriate.

Ugh, swimmer's ear. I use earplugs now and that pretty much stopped it. You might want to do the eardrops again today.

I reviewed my "small figures" notes today. I see that it is the inner teenager that hates Madame T most, probably because I most clashed with my mother in my teenage years. So it is my inner teenager who has the greatest need of reconciliation.

I suppose that's an insight, but what on earth do I do with it?

So who first refered to the Greeks as Helenes?

Has anyone ever legally changed their name in here? Duchess and I have been talking about me changing my name and I'm completely on board (I even have the name) but I'm terrified to actually do it.

The second woman legally changed her name to an odd combination of woo woo and common (like Flowing Diaz-Williams and I never asked or knew why she chose the hyphenated last name that she did or the woowoo first name either for that matter). Her birth name and then married name was about the equivalent of Mary Jones-Brown. She seemed quite happy about the change and everyone, from what I could tell, calls her the woowoo name. Her children kept their father's last name.

The Greeks—after their mythological forefather Hellen, grandson of Prometheus and Pandora. Since at least the eighth c. BC.

The name’s nothing to do with Helen of Troy.

I have just noticed that Info and Piaf’s real first names rhyme.

I’m sure this is a Sign of something.

A year or so ago Lulabelle suggested I re-write my (childhood) story as a fairy tale. I did, and it was actually pretty helpful. Maybe you could re-write your story as a fairy tale where you the hero are a teenager? And madam t could be anything you want to make her. In my fairy tale, I was a young girl and I titled it "the unhappy princess". It was a really interesting homework.
Thanks for this!

My H and I legally changed our names after we got married. The process here wasn't too bad. We had to choose a newspaper to announce our name change for 2 weeks. And then we went to see the judge. It is expensive. Cost us about $500 each. Though I think if you don't have money, you can ask for a waiver.

Eta: I changed my last name and he changed his middle name and last name.

I changed my last name when I got married--made my maiden name my middle name and H's last name my last name (got rid of original middle name). It was a bit of a pain, having to get new driver's license, new social security card, change name on credit card/bank accounts (my bank still has my name wrong--they left in my original middle initial, plus maiden then married last names, but apparently it's a huge pain to change it, so I just left it). I admit I still have my maiden name on a few accounts, and I've been married 10 years! It's easier to change from marriage though because then you can show the marriage certificate. I think changing your name for other reasons can be more difficult. Though I knew this guy who changed his first name to reflect his love for a movie (the one-word movie title followed by "ster"), and he was able to do it, so...I don't think the reason matters for legal purposes.

Went to clean up my patio and noticed a bee nest, yikes! A bunch of them flew out at me. Wont be letting my dog out there today. I've asked my dad to come kill them, he has some spray or something he uses for that.

From Toko-pa Turner, Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home, as this really speaks to me this morning:

"Enthusiasm is the vitality of spirit expressing itself through us and its grace in our voice should be welcomed and cherished. The word originates in the early 17th century, from the Greek enthousiasmos meaning ‘possessed by god.' Now, more than ever, the world needs your enlargement, your weirdness, your fiery crescendos of rebellion from boring."

Ex-MC's and current T's first names start with the same letter--actually the same two letters. I'm just calling it a coincidence in my case.
