What was the point of Mr Bates in the first ep of Downton Abbey? Was it show the politics of the servants? I cant get a handle on the timeframe. Was it a week a couple of days a month?

Bates is the most likable and interesting character of the lot.

And yes, the downstairs politics is much nastier than the upstairs.

I'm glad to hear it's not hard like some other maths! But that makes sense, that it's applied, to me that means there's a point to it besides just itself. I don't know if that makes any sense. I think the fact that I already really like the prof is going to help too!

Did I mention about my class the other night - that she told us how to approach word problems? I'm 56 years old and no teacher has ever suggested this before that I can recall. If they had, I bet I wouldn't have been so afraid of word problems my entire life. They were always the bane of my existence in math classes. She said you should always read the end of the problem first so you know what you're looking for. I got to thinking about it and omg that makes total sense. I think that's been my entire issue all along - I'd read them from the beginning, and by the time I'd get to the end all the mental static from the 'data' presented in story form had my head swimming. haha so yeah. in the math review final exam in our book, there were a couple word problems so I did what she said, read the end first and then was able to easily pull out the pieces of the 'story' part that I needed to answer the questions. A huge light bulb moment in my brain. Amazing. I don't know why I never thought of approaching them that way and more importantly why no teacher my whole life never told me that before....

One of the grad programs I emailed yesterday called me two hours later.

I was driving so I couldn’t make an appointment right then, but I’m going to try to get in next week to talk to them about my interests and see if it would be a good match.

(((Artie))) yes! Thats why jokes about story problems always end in something ridiculous, like, "if a train leaves city a..." "...then what color is the caboose?"

Do you guys think partial numbness/tension in the right arm and hand for 24+ hours is something to be concerned about?

I'd get it checked out. Could just be something minor, like you pinched a nerve, but just to be safe...

For me, that meant I had a pinched nerve. Not too serious, just uncomfortable. A doctor (or chiropractor) should be able to check it out pretty quickly. Physical therapy and time took care of it.

Not a problem at all, whisper. I know the frustration of not being able to find the words.

Just got home from grocery shopping with h. It does my heart so good to see all the kind people in the world that respond immediately to help a stranger - as we were checking out I was looking out the window and saw a woman trip and fall and hit her chin on the curb in the parking lot. I ran outside to help as another shopper who'd seen it too called 911 and another young man was helping her to sit up and hubby ran back inside to get paper towels because her mouth was bleeding (that an employee handed him before he could even ask because he had seen what was happening too) before he came out and the cashier brought a chair and we got her up and helped her walk to the chair so she was sitting in the shade when the ambulance arrived. total strangers working together to help someone. Reminder that most people are good.

I mean is there a rule about "if you make a post it must be a reasonable length" idk if I'm making stuff up now and I'm scared in case I get run in for doing the wrong thing, I have read the rules several times but I can't keep them in my brain

I don't want to end up in moderation either cause I know from a different forum if you get that done to you you're never allowed out again (friends of mine on another forum had that done to them there), idk if that's the case here and I don't wanna find out the hard way

The minimum length for posts is eight characters, so as long as you're over that, you're fine.

I can also say I’ve experienced this in the form of a pinched nerve. And also as tendinitis/carpal tunnel.
