Do the answers I give in therapy really matter. I often do not have a response, but two days later I finally know what I meant to say.
When I go see the T in two weeks I have forgotten about the subject. |

Write it down and take it with you, so you don't forget at your next session.

Its not forgetting the response..Does it matter what you say during a session or is the point to get you thinking.

I agree with coolibrarian. Writing it down can really be helpful so you don't forget in between. Sometimes I have said something that wasn't quite what I meant to say and then in the next session I explain it better (at least I think so). I do keep a daily journal type thing, mostly for mood tracking, but I also write down questions for therapist or anything I meant to say in therapy so that way I will remember.

I asked my T this question. Because I’m often anxious to reply to questions Incase I change my mind and my views later on. She just said to write down those changes and we can talk about it again.

I think that particular responses are not important per se. I personally would not write down anything to talk about in next session.
If the interaction got you thinking later on then this is good enough already. It means that some process is going on and to my mind it doesn't really matter if it happens in the session or between the sessions. However, at the same time the interaction in the session is important as well. I mean spontaneous interaction and that is the reason I would not ever go into session with a list of things to talk about because then immediately the whole interaction is controlled. If what you thought about comes to your mind during the session and you feel you want to share it then I think you should share it. However, if it doesn't come to mind then I would say it's not important at that moment for the interactive process with the T. I would just go with whatever feels important and comes to mind at this point. |

My T tells me that its more about the process and less about the content. Still, he encourages me to write down or email him things that I think of after so we can revisit what we need to. It has helped me a lot to revisit conversations and topics because I would finally feel heard and gained a new perspective on whatever I am dealing with at the time. I think it helps him figure out what things stick with me when I leave and what doesn't.

Therapy is more beneficial with less gaps between sessions.
But I understand for different reasons that's not always possible. I go 2 × wkly and I can forget to talk about something I felt I needed to. I think therapy works no matter what you talk about. If you forget something, I guess the unconscious has something else it needs to say. |
