I hear about being given the "tools" to cope. What are these tools ?

My T refers to them as skills. DBT teaches lots of coping skills. Mindfulness for example has been very helpful for me. It includes things like counted breathing which helps with relaxation to reduce stress and clear the mind.
I was freaking out over something for the past 2 days. My DBT coach suggested I put ice on my face. It somehow stops the fear response and adrenaline that was putting me in a bad place. Another tool is using aroma therapy. I wear a necklace that holds a scent which is very calming. There are many more. Ask your T what kind of tools would work best for you. |

I think tools is just another word for coping skills. Examples would be things like exercise, spending time with friends, etc. If your T teaches you some mindfulness and relaxation and grounding techniques and practices them with you during a session or across several sessions, he/she may consider this “having given you the tools.”

Like the others have said, tools are coping skills. It could be a CBT thought chart, to DBT mindfulness, etc. It can be meditation, taking a bath, using aromatherapy, a stress ball, ice, playing with a pet, etc. Whatever healthy way to manage your thoughts and emotions.

My tools are actual objects. I have a worry stone for instance and a heavy beanbag I place on my shoulder when I sleep. Essential oils are also in my tool 'chest'. When I am out and about I have a favourite pair of gloves with raised stitching I rub my fingers over that I find comforting.
I am not very good at 'thinking' tools. |
