I don't post here often but could use some insight. A few weeks ago my former therapist terminated me. We were together 4 years. To say I was devastated would be an understatement. I am not dealing with it well at all. Long story short and only one aspect of the termination, he didn't have the skills I need to help me with my parts (DDNOS not DID). I went to see this one woman last night who specializes in parts using Internal Family Systems (IFS), which I am familiar with and have found helpful but she also uses an appropriate called Instinctual Traumatic Response (ITR). I am not familiar with ITR and did a little research and frankly, it just seems to good to be true. Has anyone used ITR and/or IFS? What has been your experience? Is ITR really as quick and amazing and they say? Also, bonus for tips to how to grieve this monumental loss and go from almost daily support to session 1x a week with a stranger.

I have not used ITR but it is supposed to be something a bit like EMDR in that the techniques are meant to directly influence the traumatic memory and re-structure it. Effect the brain more directly than just talk therapy, they believe it can be achieved via expressing the story in some artistic activity, for example, and piece a more coherent narrative together. IFS is more talk therapy with a symbolic system to understand the person's different needs, motives, avoidances etc. In general, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is... But just like many people find EMDR helpful, perhaps ITR can be as well. I would not expect it to make a huge difference but perhaps it is worth trying, especially if it does not take long to see if it helps or not.
As for the loss, maybe find a support group of peers with similar background that meets (or is at least available) often? Might even be free. |

Sorry to hear about your termination. Many here have had difficult endings, therapists can cause a lot of harm and I think they are often oblivious. I’m sending you hugs.
