Couch 215: The Overcoming Couch

My school has presented its plan in the most confusing way imaginable. Current wording implies students can choose to Zoom in or attend in-person, while faculty can choose to teach via Zoom or in-person. But they want all of us on campus. Huh?

Much as I hate Zoom, a surge in cases is starting here and I’d rather go to my mother’s and help her if there’s a second wave if we really have a choice. Besides, she hasn’t yet met loan dog in the fur.

I could be wearing a fur coat. Just sayin.

I don’t know...I’m not sure our relationship is yet at the stage of you meeting my mom.

Almost done with my day trip across state lines. About 2 1/2 hours more to go. I still have to write up a discussion post that's due tonight. And eat something since I haven't ate since 7am. Might try to write the discussion while we're driving so I'm not too exhausted tonight and forget about it.

I so completely get that as it was a huge part of me scheduling again with L. Feeling guilty and helpless and scared. She is kinda like home y'know, familiar and comfortable in a world that is now anything but.

In the good news department, diabetic cat seems to be feeling better today. The vet called to check on him and I told her and said surely the higher insulin dose isn't helping this fast, and she said well yes, actually it probably is. So that's good. He's eating better today and he just looks better, in his eyes and stuff.

I'm glad that my summer class starts tomorrow, then I see L online Wednesday after work, so maybe this week will get better.

That sucks...ours had an issue a week ago. Turned out it needed more freeon (we'd just replaced the outside unit like 2 years ago, too). Hope yours gets fixed quickly and cheaply!

I’ve been allowing myself one piece after every meal. Including breakfast.

When I get chocolates, I only eat one a day - I am not a huge chocolate fan. My box of xmas frango mints lasted until easter

Have any of you tried Halo Top icecream? So yummy! I don't have to feel guilty for eating it. My favorite is red velvet or salted carmel.

I got the nerve to ask my dad to take a shower. That was so hard, but he took it like it was nothing. I asked him to take a shower before he changes clothes again (I just washed all his clothes and he hates what he's wearing, so he'll probably do it tomorrow).

"Defunding the police" is much more nuanced than just firing all the cops and saying, "Good luck, everybody!" The idea is to take money from police departments and give it to social services that enhance the social safety net and improve overall quality of life for everybody. Right now the police are both overly militarized and regularly thrust into situations for which they are not sufficiently trained (mental health crises, issues faced by people experiencing homelessness and addiction, etc).

If people can get educations and jobs and access support for whatever medical needs they may have, they are much more likely to be able to function in society without breaking the law. Plus, if there is no need for the police to act as social workers, they can instead focus on a much narrower range of functions, like tracking down the Ted Bundies that will still inevitably exist.

Surprisingly, the research on police body cameras seems to be very mixed. They may not actually do any of the things that one might expect they would do.
