Hi i just had my first appt with my therapist, and dont feel that we really got to anything. Now since this is my first time having one- should i feel this way ? I feel that iit should be a woman because.. im a girl and the things i would discuss i would want o speak to with another girl . Or should I just wait and see how this goes ?

If you would be more comfortable with a woman that is important. I have been in therapy a long time with a lot of different therapists and, at first, I needed them to be women too. Now I work with a male T (and do art therapy with a woman) and he is great... but I had to be comfortable with it first.

It is pretty normal not to get into much the first session or two depending on the T and how they are trained. Most of the time the first session is paperwork and dis usding goals and expectations. Just like any relationship you need to give it a little time to develop. If you still are not connecting or getting what you need after a few sessions mention it to your T. They may adjust to work with you better or be able to refer you to someone that would be a better match.

You can discuss this question with your counselor?

I agree. First sessions usually don't lead to great insights or change. It's about getting to know you and deciding what you want to focus on at first. It can take a few sessions to see if you really fit with the therapist and if they'll really understand you. I'd personally encourage you to keep going for now and see how things pan out.
