Now I know why everyone has trouble finding a good therapist. I'm starting to think that maybe a counselor was not the best choice. She's still working under a supervisor, because she's just starting out. But I'm pretty sure I need someone with a little more expertise, especially considering my record. I didn't want to continue therapy with the doctor from the psych unit because he was an %#@&#!. So now I'm having my family doctor manage the psych meds, while I see a counselor.

I don't know if that's what's best anymore. Should I try to find a psychotherapist with more experience?

Can you say more about why she doesn't seem like the right one to you?

Like Echoes said, I am wondering about the specific reasons why you think she may not be the one for you.

Sometimes we connect with a particular therapist-- sometimes we don't. It can definitely take some "shopping" to find the right person.

Educational experience doesn't mean everything. A good therapist is a culmination of many factors, education only being one. Connection and experience are two different things... try to sort out what is really bothering you.

My T recommended a marriage counselor for me. He knows I don't have a lot to spend, so he found an intern who has a really wonderful supervisor. I am not worried about the therapist's educational experience because I know that she will have great supervision.

Finding the right therapist is essential to promote healing. I suggest you start looking for a new therapist. I was with my old T for 8 years and when I started seeing my new Pdoc I knew right away that she was the "one." Let us know how things go.

I would tend to agree with "PinkSoil"—the relationship works (or doesn't) based on personal things, not so much on formal externalities.
