I have just recently been diagnosed with Bipolar and was hospitalized for a period of time. I thought the hospitalization would be the worst part of everything but it turns out its my support system. I love my husband very much and we have been married now for 2 years together for over 7. But I dont know how to talk to him and I fear it is going to ruin the marriage. I have tried different methods of communication but none of it seems to work. My family support is limited due to both my parents have passed on and my brother and sister are dealing with their own addictions. I am also in group therapy which only seems to make me feel worse after each session. I just want to know what steps are best for me to feel better.

If you can't communicate with your husband, why not try marriage counseling? Maybe you're not the one who is bad at communicating and maybe it's him or both of you.

Communication goes both ways and every person has a different way of communicating. Some can sit down and talk to someone face to face, some communicate better over a phone (kind of like going to Catholic confession and having the screen between you and the priest). Some find it much much easier to communicate by taking time to write things down until its perfect (me!). Keep trying different methods, and have your husband try different methods and hopefully you'll find something that works for both of you.

If you are both committed to the relationship and you are both committed to improving your communication skills, then you have a strong basis for growth and improvement.
Have you considered trying couples counseling. This can be a great way to learn and practice healthy communication skills. |
