Hello, Jenny. Threatening to hurt yourself certainly is not the best way to resolve differences with your friend.

Why did you want to hurt yourself? Did you fall out with your BF? Was it like a I want you to feel my pain too? Maybe a cry for help? |

Try to ask for what you need (reassurance, attention, etc.) directly rather than through threats and manipulation. It takes a lot of courage and strength, and requires perhaps breaking some old habits, but in the long run, people just want to be treated with respect and honesty. Hope you start feeling better soon.

Well said, farmergirl. It takes some courage and you have to learn to set aside some pride/ego but it's much easier to say "I'm feeling upset/sad/angry etc... right now. Can you put down what you're doing and talk to me for a bit?"
I had to learn how to do it. I have to say to my bf "will you please close your laptop and listen to me?" because he is not a mind reader. And putting that kind of pressure on your bf (it makes it sound like it is his fault if you hurt yourself) isn't fair to him. Then that almost forces him to become manipulative just to keep you safe (i.e. if you do then you don't love him). |

Happycheeks- Please don't hurt yourself to make a point. I used to punch myself in the head when I was in an argument just to prove how upset I was. It just made things worse. Hang in there.
