My boyfriend doesn't want me to come see him in the hospital. He is having suicidal thoughts and in a really dark place right now. I love him and havent been able to talk to him. Should I go try to see him anyway?

No, sometimes they don't even want family to see them until they are more stable.

I wouldn't. When he's ready, he'll talk. Until then, let him be.

"He is having suicidal thoughts and in a really dark place right now" is an indication that he is need of establishing immediate social connections. It is common for depressed individuals to seek isolation which can make them suicidal. You should seek immediate access to your friend after you talk to the hospital psychiatrist who may not even be aware of your friend's dangerous mental condition.

I disagree Dr. Frank, I have visited many times when folks have been in an isolation ward for care on mental illness. The rules are often time set up by the hospital and removes outside influence for their patients. My mother was in a mental ward, and about two weeks before she could see others, hospital rules. Also as a hospice person, I had to wait quite awhile to see a patient in the mental ward area.

I also disagree with you Dr Frank. When I was hospitalized I didn't want to see my parents right away and it actually helped me to bond with the people inside of the facility. I felt ashamed and the last thing I wanted was for the people who loved me to see me in that state.
