Well I stuck my foot in my mouth when I was talking to one of my few friends. We we're talking about travel and I told her that I was thinking about going to the Carribean. She looked at me and said she wasn't sure where the Carribean was. I paused for a second and said - Really you don't know where the Carribean is? Well, from the look on her face she didn't appreciate my tone - I didn't mean to hurt her I just was a little shocked. So later it really started to bother me because I know how much it irritates me when somebody says something insensitive. The irony is that the comment may have cause me more heartburn than her because she probably absorbed it and moved on. Now I keep thinking I need to aplologize before she takes me off her friend list - this is my twisted thinking.

Okay, I can't deny I had a bit of a chuckle; but seriously, I DO feel your horror. I've been in a similar situation. I would simply ask my friend if they were offended and that you apologize. You're right, they have probably moved on from it leaving you with guilt. All in all though I wouldn't worry. |

She might prefer that you just not bring it up again. We all are guilty of a gaffe now and then. You'll make more, as will I. That's just unavoidable. But the fact that you care means you will learn. One remark doesn't make or break a friendship. It's the net effect of the kind and helpful things you've said weighed against the occasional clumsy outburst.

Well I once had a colleague ( college educated US born) who thought that Mexico is currently one of US states. My reaction was worse than yours lol lol

I know I keep thinking good god you don't know where the Carribean is - thing is she's really a good person and I just don't want to hurt anyone because I'm always walking on eggshells myself.
