I responded to a intiative I received to an online personal I posted a long time ago . . . then sent out four more ice-breakers to ads I've had on my short list. My personal, BTW, is off-putting to say the least; no photo and about two sentences that say I'm looking for a pal to enjoy jazz with, and I don't believe in instant anything. It takes a courageous soul to respond to that. In fact, right after I posted it, the service sent me a little note asking if I'd like some coaching about how to write a more inviting self-introduction. Don't know what got into me . . . Jeez, I guess not -- I've managed to earn my living as a write at various times.

Maybe kicking up my heels in Savannah for a day really was good for me.

It's nice to see you back, September. I hope you are continuing to feel better. I posted about the trip in General, "Treated Myself" -- Treated Myself

Thank you for responding, September. I'm a bit surprised that other women of my age group who persistently discuss this issue have not posted to this thread. Whassup with that?

Well, I've heard back from him. He is not a good writer -- does not know where to put punctuation. All of my intimate partners have been writers, except when I was younger when I had some musicians (didn't we all?), which is what this guy is.

There will be a long period of online talk betore we meet, I think.

Wants, hon...I've met sev men online who were not good at writing, and I have to tell you, in my own experience, this is not good! I dismissed the grammatical errors, the misspelled words, the lack of articulation, and actually dated them (there are three I can think of!) My opinion now is that if a person has not learned to write and express himself well, he is probably not going to be a good date or, even more than that...potential mate.
I sound pessimistic, don't I!!!! Sorry. But you being a writer, will probably find this fella deficient on many levels.

Patty, thank you for confirming that this is not a shallow complaint. I found his first message a bit boring -- and then I wonder, "Well, who am I to judge on the basis of one post?" But obviously, ability to express oneself well is not some tiny little thing to me but a huge part of who I am.

In fact, I've already started wondering about the polite way to break off contact -- "I'm busy right now?"

Wants,
I worried about how I responded regarding this matter, feeling that I may have sounded judgmental, but I was just speaking from my own experience. During the time I was on the singles' sites, I tried to dismiss the lack of writing ability, bad grammar, poor punctuation, simple inability to express oneself, by telling myself, "Hey, he may be a really nice fella!"
As I said, I did meet three such men, and my conclusion is that the ability to express oneself in writing and in conversation is very important, at least to me, and sounds like it is to you also!
Love

Yup, sounds like it. Everyone I meet online whom I'd want to meet F2F makes me laugh or has interesting things to say.

if you can't talk or write, how else does one communicate?

edited by Pat..........someone here once complained/corrected my punctuation. Don't know what got into me . . . Don't know what got into me . . . i can write perfectly, when i have to. and i do it frequently.......however, i'm here and i'm laidback and it just flows....as do my dots. Don't know what got into me . . .

i do not think that is the case in some of those profiles that i'e read. they seem to be written by 3rd graders. if you are on a dating/friend service, would you not want to put your best "pen" forward? shakes head.........
