My boyfriend is great... other than he goes on these rants where he thinks I don't need my meds, that I don't need to track my moods, etc... yeah, while even I admit that the manias DO have a bit of an allure, he thinks that it's all in my head! Then, the rest of the time, he's asking if I remebered to do what I need to do, like taking my meds. Any advice?

Goofy Girl,

A lot of people don't have a good understanding of mental health issues.

I can't think of an example, but my husband sometimes has two opposing views on an issue. I call him on it, and tell him he can't have it both ways. He has to chose one stance, and stick to it. I try to smile at him when I am saying this.

Or you could tell him, if he doesn't want to support you in what you know is right for you, then he needs to stay out of it.

Just some ideas. What to do when significant other thinks that I make myself manic/depressed?

Hi there -- There is a lot of ignorance and misunderstanding about depression. There are lots of resources available here at Psych Central to help us educate ourselves and others. Click on the Resources button in the horizontal menu at top of this page and go to the Depression section.

One item in the list that stood out for me was this one:

Depression Fallout
The official website for author Anne Sheffield, whose latest book is Depression Fallout: The Impact of Depression on Couples and What You Can Do to Preserve the Bond (Quill/HarperCollins, 2003). The site has details on Sheffield's books, links to depression resources, and an interactive message board for depression fallout sufferers to visit and post messages.

I also noticed there are videos. Perhaps you can pass one of these resources on to your bf.

Good luck and please keep us posted.

"he thinks that it's all in my head"...well I guess since its not physical it must be in our heads...

I don't want to make light of the situation...just found it an odd comment for him to make?

Education...might be the best way...leave information out and about (private areas that general guests don't see). He is bound to pick it up and read it...

Thank you... I think I will start leaving things around... maybe in the bathroom since he's complaining about the lack of reading material in there!
