I entered a retail store where I heard music similar to my own retail store (different company), so I filmed the area so I can record the music and show my friends the coincidence, since we work at the same retail store with the same annoying music.
I left the store and further waited for a friend to arrive. All of a sudden, a man confronts me about filming in his store and started questioning my motives and wanted personal details - specifically my name. I asked him if there's a problem with filming in the store and said it requires permission. Between those moments I told him I can delete the filming if he wants. Afterwards, when he asked for my name, I uncomfortably told him I did not mean to get into trouble and tried to explain my true motive - showing the coincidence of another store having the same background music. He still suspected and asked where exactly is my retail store and told him where it is. He then said there's another store from my same network and thought I was filming for that nearby store (From there I knew it was competition suspicion). Then he added I was filming curtains and wondered if we also sell curtains, to which I said we don't. All settled down well, he told me he thought I was sent by the nearby retail store's manager and assured him it's not true. He then said if I ever need anything I can talk to him. For a feeling of connection purpose I asked his name and introduced mine, shook hands and he repeated the previous statement of "If I ever need anything". It all felt weird to me, mostly from my side. What do you think of this? |

When I worked in retail people sometimes took pictures of items to send to their spouses etc but no one was ever filming. I think it was a valid question why were you filming. Not that weird imho

I watch a lot of Youtube videos, and a lot of stores don't allow you to record. Even some bigger stores; I'm pretty sure Walmart and Trader Joe's don't allow you to film. Some people obviously get away with it, but I've seen lot of vloggers be asked to put their cameras away.
I agree with Divine, I don't think it's weird. Maybe he's had incidents with competition filming in the past? |

Quote:
When I was very young my dad would occasionally send me to competitors' displays at trade shows to look for copies of their literature and price lists to bring back to him. At the time I had no idea anyone would object, but one competitor caught me and asked me what I was doing. When I told him, he asked me to take him to my dad and then they had a private conversation and I was never again asked to go do that!

It is an awkward situation. I'd probably feel weird too. But also doesn't seem like a big deal. Especially in the end. Though it's a little odd phrasing of what he said in my opinion. "if you ever need anything let me know.". If you didn't think it was weird though, never mind. Why do you think you felt so uncomfortable? Was it because he asked your name? I understand feeling uncomfortable. One time, i volunteered at a nursing home and took some pictures of a halloween party and the residents. A nurse chastised me because i wasnt supposed to do that. A privacy issue. I apologized and erased the pics. It was awkward but i got over it. It sounds to me like you handled it fine by the way.

Thanks people.
Yes, his question wasn't weird, I agree. But the whole tension afterwards from his side is what made this whole situation weird/awkward. He made me feel guilty in a way, and at our retail store we were taught to cause minimal guilt to the customers. For instance when a customer passes through a buzzer and it buzzes, instead of telling "Hey, you stole something" for example, we tell them "Hey, it seems something you carry causes the buzzer to buzz so we need to check out if there are still armed items left (we disarm them by sticking a sticker on the buzzer barcode sticker). |
