Here’s a question I have. Are women scared of sitting next to certain men on public transport such as subway trains and buses?
Do they judge men on certain criteria if they do contemplate sitting next to them? And if they the man doesn’t pass the test, women then choose to stand instead? I think this is one thing that women do do, but they don’t want to admit. |

I rarely ride public transit. My criteria for sitting next to someone? They aren't drunk and they dont smell bad. Otherwise I really dont care.

I really don't care myself - unless the indivdual is blatantly missbehaving or purposely being an outrageous buffoon.

I'm uncomfortable sitting next to anyone on the bus, regardless of who they are or what they look like.

I will pick a seat not next to anyone as my first choice.
If that is not an option then I will take the nearest available seat. If the person I end up sitting next to is obnoxious in any way I will look around for another available seat or just totally not engage at all with them. Transportation is not about who you sit next to it's about getting to where you are going.

As long as they aren't drunk or behaving erratically, I sit next to anyone, male or female.
Can I ask why this matters at all? Is there some problem with any human being, man or woman, assessing their own safety and making choices accordingly?

Why do you think women do this? Have you felt like you've been recently judged? And do you think men are incapable of passing the same judgments?
To answer your question, I sit next to people- men or women - who won't take up my personal space. Simple as that.

When I ride public transit, I'd rather sit alone, but if that's not an option, I'm willing to sit next to anyone who won't actively annoy me. It's not about "type." I just feel more comfortable with a larger personal bubble.

I am very causious about who I set next to. When I get a feeling about a person, if it is a negative feeling, I won't go antwhere near them.

As an aside, are you aware that most women have been molested at one time or another by some guy somewhere on public transportation. I've been felt up, bothered for money, had a guy fall into my lap. I just want to get where I'm going, seated, if possible. Here's another tidbit: Many women in healthcare will not wear "scrubs" on public transport because of the asinine attention their uniform attracts from men. |

I always try to sit near a good looking woman. But only if to her it would be logical for me to sit there. And I always notice when a woman passes by an empty seat near me to go sit somewhere else. So yes, I judge and feel judged.
I always hope a pretty girl specially decides to sit opposite of me, then will state at me because it is pleasant to her. Then will make eye contact. Then will attempt to talk to me. But of course that never happens. I don't live in a big city in the US, so public transport is very safe and I think groping is less of a problem. But in the back of my mind I always have this idea that woman don't feel safe around strange men and that I look creepy because I don't look happy and I cannot smile charmingly. |

I live in a big metro area but I drive everywhere, don’t use public transit .
I do travel to big cities, some cities often. And use busy public transportation, think NYC, Chicago, London, Paris, Moscow. I don’t see any difference between how people behave on a public transportation in the US versus other countries. I don’t see US public transport being less safe and why would it be? Usually it’s a luxury to choose wher to sit on public transport in any decent size city. Sometimes you lucky you have place to stand! Most people don’t think of public transit as social time or place to meet others, more just way to get to work or school and home |

Yeah me too - don't like sitting next to anyone I might touch - and I particularly hate sitting opposite someone, having to look away all the time. On some of the trains I catch all the seats are facing, I hate those, they make me feel really uncomfortable.

I don't think it's but a split second decision and what's available for seating.

I used the Metro in Rome almost every day for weeks when I was staying there. I was 22 at the time & had no problems ever which from the reputatiln we have always heard was surprising but mostly everyone had their own seat or was hanging on while standing. We were ALL just heading to our destination

I’ll admit that I avoid sitting next to any man. I’ve had some traumatic experiences in the past though.
