Hi Ruby. Maybe there is a double-standard at your work? But then two wrongs don't make a right, so try to get some help on developing a professional etiquette, okay?

Ruby, maybe you can state that as your Intro. before you present your case, as this is a legitimate disorder. But like Divine said, you should have your case manager (or someone in person) help you. You shouldn't have to go through this all alone. ![]() |

Also in past threads that are similar to this it has sounded like her case worker does work with her regarding the problems & she doesn't go through it alone but continues to struggle basically with the same issues over & over. It doesn't make sense to me why they keep putting her back in similar work environments where she has such a struggle to function appropriately unless they keep hoping she will learn.

For goodness sakes, just STOP JOKING AROUND.
Try to be as professional as possible and ignore trying to fit in. Your attempts to do so are ending in failure. Why continually risk that? Just do your job. Leave the inappropriate behaviour to others and don't even consider playing that game. By being careful about your own actions you will increase your chances of (1) gaining the respect of your co-workers; and (2) making a success of your work. Concentrate on your work only. Instead of joining in, report the inappropriate behaviour to your case worker. Joking around is never appropriate in a workplace. Instead of trying to figure out how to play the game just don't participate in it at all. |

asd is a disorder but that doesn't give anyone the "right" to act out at work. sorry. work is work. you are not there to act in the manner she described. if you can not manage that then maybe you can not manage work. it is a professional place..people are paying you for a service and professionalism. i get that there is some interaction between staff, but it has to be appropriate...what the poster is describing is not. if she is an adult, and her case manager feels she can handle the work environment then there has to be some point where she realizes and accepts the responsibility to represent herself in a professional manner. or find a different position or no position. sorry, as a manager in different occupations, especially customer service, that behavior is not acceptable.

Yeah, I think you're wrong on all counts, sarahsweets. I read enough to know what ruby was asking. She wasn't asking if she should stop joking around at work, unlike everyone else at her job, she was asking why she was being singled out. Why she felt she was being singled out. Everyone's missed that point including yourself. And also you should've noticed, my post was for ruby not with someone who just wanted to have a chat with me about what you thought. Okee dokee sarahsweets? Have a nice day. |

If you have read Ruby's previous threads, this is not the first time she has caused herself problems on her job for similar inappropriate behavior.

you can argue your perceptions til the cows come home but at the end of the day, you're working for someone else and their rules apply. If I'm responsible for my crew and set rules for them and they dont' follow them I will warn, suspend then fire them. I've had to in the past, deal with people that have a problem with how I managed my stores, but in the end, it didn't work out because I was given the responsibility as manager and not the employee. The way you state what you just did implies the problem is with joking and from your descriptions, I highly doubt that it is. Did the manager ever tell you "never joke, make light of things, kid around...etc"? Calling out certain behaviors is far from saying all joking is not allowed. Stop, take a step back and actually analyze what it is that people, and your manager actually have a problem with. It seems in most posts you've had a problem with behavior you generalize things and make it about something that is never the case. Your interpretations of being reprimanded for behavior is skewed. Your view is that running around the place, leaving your station and yelling things about murder and cannibalism is joking around, as if to say it's mild humor and it's not. Even if it would be in some contexts, the manager and people that have a problem with it have made it clear that it's not. Separate the entirety of being able to joke around from the level of intensity of your behavior and you'll see it's not about joking itself it's about that. Ask yourself also, why you took this job. Stop and think about whether you took it to try and find friends, socialize and have fun or if you took it because you need to make money for living. If it's the former, I'd say you're in the wrong mindset and if it's the latter, forget socializing at work and just do whatever job it is that you're getting paid for every minute you're there. |

Can you back that up with actual information to make the argument that any of it is garbage? if you're going to dispute someone's statement of things it usually gives you more credit if you have an actual rebuttal to add or something to counter the point instead of just calling someone else's post simply "nonsense" or "utter garbage"

Do you like it when your opinions are called "garbage" & "utter nonsense" or do you live by double standards? I personally don't give a crap what your opinion is of what I said.....but it is a rude way to interface with people. Your choice.

Ruby, does your case manager or therapist ever suggest how you should go about this behavior at work? Did she or he try any kind of role play? Role play is a common technique in working with people with ASD. They pretend to be customers or managers and you try different scenarios or vice versa.
