If he already knows it’s upsetting you I’m not sure why he’s not stopping this, you know him best but I do think stating outright when he does it your feelings is a good idea. I don’t think it’s fair that he’s doing this when you’re trying your best to move positively forward.

Edit: I’m referring to when he’s talking about painful episodes in your past in the above. I read your reply to Azul, if he’s just referring to general events in the past (like before you were born) then I would honestly try and divert the conversation to present day.

My parents relive stories many times but they are both elderly now, for them it’s a comfort, a surety, but I’m getting the impression your dad might not be that old.
Thanks for this!

Yeah sometimes it's events that happened either before or just after birth but other times it’s painful memories that I really didn't want them knowing in the first place but found out. My parents are in their 60’s so middle aged but I can see how those who get older want to reminisce about the old times which we all do from time to time but I do think it becomes more common when you get older.

If your dad likes to reminisce about past ,but only brings up painful memories, you can try divert him by talking about a good memory.Like about a vacation you went on with them or about a milestone you reached previously. I am curious to know if it works.A diversion towards a past good incident.I mean a lot of people enjoy bringing up past events again and again, but nice ones.
Thanks for this!

Yes I agree and that's a good strategy.
