Do you think a marriage certificate is a "get out of jail free" card?

In my (sometimes, but not always) growing mistrust of people, I find myself thinking about the motivation of a person making the "anybody else would have left" comment. What issues of their own are they struggling with? Are they having their own marital problems? Do they wish THEY had made a different decision themselves?
Will I ever stop trying to think about what people *really* mean when they speak...
