in my process of dealing with my many emotions related to my spirituality i have drawn upon many sources and come across many historical stories of trials and tribulations of those who also have suffered in their quest to find inner peace and sanctuary...
i would like now to say a few words in memory of those who've passed before me... you are not forgotten... i am saddened for those who have suffered and may your souls find everlasting peace... Salem witch trials

Quote: The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings before local magistrates followed by county court trials to prosecute people accused of witchcraft in Essex, Suffolk, and Middlesex Counties of colonial Massachusetts, between February 1692 and May 1693. Over 150 people were arrested and imprisoned, with even more accused who were not formally pursued by the authorities. The two courts convicted twenty-nine people of the capital felony of witchcraft. Nineteen of the accused, fourteen women and five men, were hanged. One man, refusing to enter a plea, was ordered to be crushed to death under heavy stones. At least five more of the accused died in prison.

link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem_witch_trials |

I'd like to join you in memory of all those King James had tried and killed as witches also, by those following his laws against them, and all those killed by vigilante justice, following the instructions on how to ID a witch in the book King James wrote on Deamonology, or justifying their actions from scripture
I have been haunted by these thoughts time and time again, as the images were played out in my head of these horrific desplays of justice This has been a very hard topic for me in the past as a teen and adult, while searching for my place in a spiritual community People have always looked down on me for mentioning this, but it is something that hurts my heart, mind and soul |

Yes indeed this is a dark area of life.
![]()
Although the list below contains dates even earlier than the 13th century, all victims were tried, convicted, and sentenced to death from Witchcraft persecution, most from the Catholic church. I compiled this list for research and memorial purposes, and the hatchet is buried, BUT, Witchcraft persecution carries on to this very day. With that said: NEVER FORGET! THE INQUISITION SALEM WITCH TRIALS of 1692 JOAN D'ARC -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KILLING of WITCHES Some numbers of the unknown: 17,000+ killed in Scotland from 1563 to 1603 70,000 killed in England after 1573 40,000 executed between 1600-1680 in Great Britain 22,000 executed in Bamberg, Germany 1610-1840 30,000 burned by the Inquisition 300+ killed in South Africa between 1986 and 1996 100+ killed in Indonesia, 1998

It is horrible how many have suffered and been persecuted through ignorance. The Salem "witches" and many of the European ones probably had ergot poisoning from rye gone bad. Sort of like all the other mentally ill that were tortured before very recent times.

When I was 16 My Fav aunt took us on vacation. She was tracing family history. Our family came from Mass. Long history of being there.
We spent 2 weeks of going threw cemetery's. "which at 16 is not the funnest thing to do". She was looking for very old stones and records. Always legends from family's as you know. When thinking about this it brings a smile to my face. My aunt was great! She was never ashamed of our history. Up till now I forgot the vacation. Funny how you forget things. We went to every town hall and every record place. Where am i going with this....... She traced one family member back to being a person who was hung for no good reason.......... Phew.....The only reason she could find was the person"a lady" was a little different..... How sad is that........ Here is a link a good friend gave me http://www.salemweb.com/memorial/ Hope this was ok to post....... Another sheep's history |

After reading all the responses in this thread, they have only served to reenforce my fear of "religion", organized or not.
I think I will just believe in the love and understanding of God and leave the judging to him/her too ![]() ((((For all the lost souls killed because of their beliefs, or lack of them)))) (((For all the rest of us))) Peace everyone......and take care! |

Throughout history, religion has always played a major role in why people have done things. Man's humanity to man is a theme that repeats over and over, and is motivated by many things. Sometimes it is someone's belief that they are right and anyone who disagrees is wrong. When people do hurtful things, they are always motivated by something that they feel is very important to them. It might be survival, land, power, or fear. Religion is all too often a convenient excuse. But those who do evil things in the name of religion are not serving God and do not represent the majority of religious people.
What can we take away from all these tragedies and learn and use to make the world a better place? Atrocities such as these are not committed by individuals, but by someone who is in power and wants to stay that way. What else?

I think it's important to remember that it isn't necessarily the group the people doing the killing belong to, but the people themselves who are performing the acts.
When one is quick to fear a Christian, Jew, or Muslim, or a "witch" and thus condemn any religion because of atrocities, let us remember that every one of Hitler's henchmen was a PhD. You don't fear and condemn all PhDs because of this, do you?

sky, you raise a good question, but it is human nature to stereotype people due to religon or , race, this is a sad fact of life
example: here in the south where I live in Southeastern Nc, I notice on an almost daily bases that hispanics are looked down on by blacks & whites, of course not by "all" but as a large majority(in my opinion) it is a sad truth that I see daily, I happen to be part black, hispanic, indian and white, though I look just white ..... I have had in the past, had a few confrontations with people (friends) who did not realize I had hispanic family and friends , when I confronted them with the fact that I am not a racist after listening to their discrimintory comments mostly about hispanics, alot of whom claimed to be christains so yes, it is not the group of people who preform the acts but individuals, but when they are representing themselfs as christian ,jew, muslim or african it does reflect negatively on the group as a whole to the average mind, though in reality not all in the groups may agree with their acts I am not targeting christains for these acts , but God.... if he inspired the scriptures(which I think men did on their own, not God) that imply we should "KILL" witches, and King James as a individual for setting a poor example |

Hmmm I wonder why it's also human nature to blame God for such acts?
