My son has just been diagnosed with schitzoaffective disorder. He is currently in hospital following a manic psychotic episode. They are looking at discharge soon but I'm really worried because he still doesn't think he's poorly! He is still psychotic but no where near as bad as he was! Is there anything I can do to help him gain some insight? He just gets angry if I make any suggestions that he might be poorly! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

If you could hook him up with a good councilor or psychotherapist it may help. Sometimes kids resist listening to any advice from their parents once they reach a certain age.

I agree with shoe that he needs a therapist. I have trouble getting my 20 year old son to listen to anything I have to say....my friends son who is the same age has the same problem. Kids of this age often won't listen to their parents so an outside source for help is needed. Just keep loving your son and letting him know you always will....leave the rest to a professional or get professional guidance. My heart goes out to you as one mother to another. (((Hugs)))

He needs a psychiatrist and therapist at the same clinic. Call to set up treatment before he gets out. Then your wait time is less. See if there is an intensive outpatient program or Partial hospitalization program near you. Don't call him out on his psychosis, just be there to comfort him. Above all you are his parent not his provider don't try to take on both jobs. If you can get a therapist too. It'll help you transition from parent to parent of Special needs.
