I'm a great admirer of Marsha Linehan who developed dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) - mainly to help suicidal people with borderline personality disorder.

She recently revealed that she is diagnosed with mental illness herself, including being diagnosed with schizophrenia and given thorazine and ECT. Here's an article about her experiences: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/23/he...ives.html?_r=1

Here's a quote from the article:

Quote:
A discharge summary, dated May 31, 1963, noted that “during 26 months of hospitalization, Miss Linehan was, for a considerable part of this time, one of the most disturbed patients in the hospital.”

...

“I was in hell,” she said. “And I made a vow: when I get out, I’m going to come back and get others out of here.”
Reminds me of Pat Deegan who says her survivor mission was to reform the mental health system.
Thanks for this!

Successful people with mental illness are such an inspiration to me. Frederick Frese also comes to mind. He has a PhD in psychology and he has schizophrenia. I believe he got his PhD 10 years after he was diagnosed with this illness. People, please don't let your mental illness hold you back from attaining your goals/dreams!

My post count is less than 10, so I can't post a link. I wanted to post a video of Frederick Frese giving a speech to an audience on Youtube. He's a great speaker - funny and witty. Just type in his name on Youtube or Google video if you'd like to learn more about him.
Thanks for this!

thanks, I will read the article. Timely, in that my T has recently started a group using DBT, which I may phase into after 1 on 1 T for 3.5 years.

Sometimes, the effective therapists have been there!

I think DBT is great. I tend to like cognitive behavioral approaches. DBT is very much skills based. Learn the skills and apply them.

I'm trying to get my son to try it. We've started with the mindfulness skills and with distract skills which is part of the distress tolerance module. It's just the two of us, though, and I'm not an expert. One of the cool things about DBT is the team aspect. You have people you can call on to coach you through using the skills in real life situations.

Anyway I adore Marsha Linehan - you can find videos of her on youtube - and I had no idea she had her own history of significant mental distress.
