I'm a great admirer of Marsha Linehan who developed dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) - mainly to help suicidal people with borderline personality disorder.
She recently revealed that she is diagnosed with mental illness herself, including being diagnosed with schizophrenia and given thorazine and ECT. Here's an article about her experiences: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/23/he...ives.html?_r=1 Here's a quote from the article: Quote:

Successful people with mental illness are such an inspiration to me. Frederick Frese also comes to mind. He has a PhD in psychology and he has schizophrenia. I believe he got his PhD 10 years after he was diagnosed with this illness. People, please don't let your mental illness hold you back from attaining your goals/dreams!
My post count is less than 10, so I can't post a link. I wanted to post a video of Frederick Frese giving a speech to an audience on Youtube. He's a great speaker - funny and witty. Just type in his name on Youtube or Google video if you'd like to learn more about him.

I'm trying to get my son to try it. We've started with the mindfulness skills and with distract skills which is part of the distress tolerance module. It's just the two of us, though, and I'm not an expert. One of the cool things about DBT is the team aspect. You have people you can call on to coach you through using the skills in real life situations. Anyway I adore Marsha Linehan - you can find videos of her on youtube - and I had no idea she had her own history of significant mental distress. |
