Hi there, I really don't want to seem like a hypochondriac and that this is the most relevant area to post in, but there has been so much going on recently, and I've noticed something over the past few weeks. It didnt bother me at first, but I have noticed a smell, a smell that will not go away for more than 5 minutes. It is there when I wake up I until I fall asleep, and it has gone on for so long, today I thought it was gone but after a couple of hours it came back and hasn't gone at all.

The smell is something I can't identify, I would say it's a little hazy, maybe like a reaction of a chemical giving off a peculiar-smelling gas that is almost addictive but not particularly good to smell. I'm very cleanly, and nobody else smells it at all, I thought maybe it was a nose infection (I googled a lot) but it just doesn't last this long, and I came across something called 'phantosmia' but have only found very little information. The phantosmia is an 'olfactory hallucination' but I don't think you can be aware of hallucinations? This will seem silly but I had a blackout for a minute the other week and fell over and went all dizzy, and I think it happened all around then?

Similar things have happened in the past, which is why I don't think it's an infection, I mean things that people don't believe. I remember being in a hall for a presentation at school once before I finished to start A levels, the hall was quiet but this loud music that was slurred and unfamiliar came on, it was uncomfortable so I covered my ears... Someone asked what I was doing and I said the music was too loud. The music disappeared suddenly after a while, and everyone said there was no music at the presentation, and I have only told a couple of people about this but I saw a person that nobody else saw once too, it was scary because I was in my room and she suddenly appeared and I jumped back on my bed in shock and stared fearfully for what seemed like forever and I looked down because I was scared and she disappeared. Nobody believes that, because my house is secure, but I haven't exactly told many people at all, for a lot of reasons.

I was wondering if anybody knew anything about the smell that won't disappear? And maybe if they have any other ideas on all of these things, I'm really sorry again if this seems silly and unbelievable, I swear it's the truth though

Hallucinatons can be auditory, visual, or sensations like smells or touch. Everyone is different in how they experience hallucinations.

For me, I see a man in my house sometimes. He is about the same size as my husband, but he's not. My husband is always sitting at his desk or somewhere else from when I see this man, not walking around or anything. He wears a blue and white striped shirt. I never see his face, his head is usually a blur to me, and his legs, too. Sometimes he's a shadow standing in the dark, like against a window. Like you can see him blocking out the light.... It's scary.

dark_heart_x, do u think that could be a spirit? I've seen way too much weird stuff not to believe in ghosts. The house I grew up in was haunted. And I have definitely smelled things that aren't there. Some can be attributed to my bad sinuses, but others have no explanations, and no one else smells them. The one smell that I smelt the most was what smelled like toast. And there was no one cooking anything in the house. But I know what toast smells like and this smelt of toast.

I've thought about that and I don't think it is a spirit. I do believe in ghosts, and I do think there are spirits or something in my house, but this is not one of them. My great-grandfather fell down the basement stairs and hit his head on the cement floor and bled to death when my dad was 6 years old. (My dad is now 75.) So, I always felt great-grandpa was in the house. And... something else, too, which is a bit more... not human? Perhaps. Anyway, my dad lived in that house as a boy and had the same "ghostly" experiences. My husband has had experiences, my 6 year old has, too. And my mother-in-law, too.

But, this particular "man" isn't a spirit. We've lived in that house for 6 straight years now. And I lived there for 2 years before that, and my husband about 6 months during that time (a year in between we lived somewhere else.) This "man" is a new phenominon which started just about a year ago for me.

I used to have really bad tactile hallucinations. I thought someone was using an electromagnetic weapon to control my facial muscles. The voices claimed they would gain control of my vocal chords and force me to admit to crimes I didn't commit. I would run around looking for cameras, tracking devices, and spy equiptmemt. Thankfully meds stopped my delusions. The voices still say these things but I no longer believe it.

You CAN be aware of a hallucination. Most people aren't but from what I can tell? This smell has been around SO long you can't help but know it isn't real! So don't discount it so quickly.

My pdoc gave me a paper to see a neurologist to figure out if my olfactory hallucinations are a side-effect of seizures. While most seizures are immediately followed or preceded by a smell that doesn't last very long, sometimes you can get what's called post-ictal psychosis which can last up to 6 months. So I'd definitely consult your regular doctor or a therapist/pdoc if you already have one. There can be very many things that cause hallucinations.

Good luck!
