I've heard of it. But I don't know off hand of anyone who has tried it. Have you read anything about it being helpful?

I've never been impressed with the whole vitamin treatment thing. Some people do swear by it. But some of it seems to be kind of a scam. There's some company selling a special vitamin mix that's supposed to be good for bipolar and sz, but it just always seemed like a cheat. I mean they charge a lot of money for the same vitamins you can get at Dollar General for almost nothing.
I took a second look when spiritual_emergency came here and said her child was trying the vitamin thing. I think it's the one I always thought was a scam. Because s_e is pretty sharp, it made me look again. s_e promised she'd come back and tell us how the experiment worked - win or lose - but she never did, so ... ![]() About niacin: I read that people with sz don't get the niacin flush. So I went out and found some niacin (had to look hard to get the kind that isn't made to be non-flushing). I tried it and I had a powerful flush reaction. Then I gave it to my son, and he did too. Not sure what that proves. There's a blogger who claims to have cured both of her daughters of mental illness with dietary changes. It all seemed too complicated to me. Here's her blog: It's Not Mental (I just looked at it, and I see she's pushing that expensive vitamin program. It's called TrueHope.)

as usual you are right costello, these companies just prey on ill people and make money from us. They can't get in trouble because they are too powerful. stinks!

then again unless you are only speaking of the companies themselves thats one thing. dont downgrade the vitamin theory though. thats like blasting the gluten theory yet so many accept that! vitamins might work for some people - even if psychiatry says they never had the disorder to begin with - god forbid they say "disease". im not saying its for everyone or even the majority. NOT even saying it cures it but could reduce amount of medication needed. funny how no one questions psychiatry like this but theyll question everything non-psychiatric in regards to treating mental health. you literally just said a defining statement about psychiatry. think about it.

In general, I think taking vitamins are good for you. I think a lot of people are deficient in things because we do eat so much processed foods. Whether or not something helps you may be part of your own personal body chemistry, though.
Technically all things we take in are chemicals. Food is a chemical, medicine is a chemical, vitamins are a chemical. So, everyone reacts to chemicals differently. When I feel something is a scam, it's when someone is trying to sell something as a "cure," regardless of what it is. Also, anything that requires you to remove things that are actually healthy for you from your diet. I've seen this so many times. One of those things ia bariatric surgery "cures" diabetes. It actually doesn't. It can help a great deal, but it doesn't cure it. We have a patient who is one of the first women to ever have bariatric surgery, and her diabetes is completely out of control. But, for several years after the surgery, her diabetes was in control. Anyway, I'm using too many words so I'm going to stop there.

Yes, I've used Niacin before, and the type I used or the amount, made me really red and flushed my face/skin. It was part of a weight loss program I was on, it was supposed to burn fat. It worked. The weight loss was worth the flushing to me. What are you going to use it for? (if you don't mind my curiosity, not trying to be nosy lol)

Oh I didn't realize the dual benefits. Niacin is super cheap too at Walmart, like a hundred tablets for around five or so bucks which should last you a while. Wouldn't hurt to try it. Let us know if you do and what the effects were, I wouldn't mind adding it back to my regimen, since I'm taking pills that are non-narcotic now lol

In my case, my son hates when I ask him to run these little experiments. So I have to be very careful about what I ask him to do. He'll just get impatient with me and tell me he doesn't want to try anything else! ![]() Plus it gets expense. Quote:
