Anyone had any experiences with this? I was prescribed it yesterday, don't know if she gave it me for bipolar disorder or for the psychotic symptoms because she hasn't actually diagnosed me yet, she just wanted to tackle the symptoms.

I am on 10mg and started last night, and today I am feeling sooo spaced out, I am completely numb and can't focus in on things properly. Is this a common side effect?

Yes, for many that spaced out feeling is a common side effect. It should lessen over time. Do you take it once a day or twice?

Be very careful about what you eat. Zyprexa has been helpful for both BP and psychotic symptoms in many people but weight gain seems to be a major problem for many. Maybe knowing that weight gain is a major side effect will help you to avoid that problem.

When my daughter was given it as one pill a day, she took it around 6 pm every night and it let her sleep through the night without feeling too spaced out in the morning.

Hope this helps. Im sure others will be on here soon to give you their experiences with zyprexa.

My son takes olanzapine. It's the only one of the APs that's he's tried which has been really helpful. I don't know if he felt spaced out when he started it.

I think I'm going to be prescribed it tomorrow and I'm absolutely terrified :/

I've heard it's effective. It was engineered to mimic clozapine's effectiveness without the blood side effects. Unfortunately the weight gain could be huge and high risk of diabetes. It changes your metabolism from preferring carbs to fat, so the sugar stays in your blood leading to diabetes. Scary stuff!

I'm also worried about being too sedated with it. 0.5mg risperidone turned me into a zombie, but then quetiapine/Seroquel didn't sedate me hardly at all and that's renowned for sedation, so everyone differs.

All the best Twigg

Bean has had okay results. For the first time in her life she sleeps at night when on it.

Her doctor also prescribes Metformin (usually a diabetic pill) along with it. It is supposed to somewhat counteract the side effects of hunger and weight gain from zyprexa when used as 500mg with dinner every night.

Seems to help a little.

Not everyone has the weight gain problem. Actually my son has a hard time maintaining his weight. He has to force himself to eat.

Normal weight for my son is probably mid-140's. He went into the hospital very underweight at 116. He came out on 35 mg of Zyprexa. He did gain weight, but he needed to. His pdoc began slowly lowering the dose almost immediately. My son's weight topped out at about 165 then started going back down as the dose came down. He eventually was back down to the 130's when he decided to start making himself eat more. Right now he's in the mid- to upper-140's and on a 2.5 mg dose.

He's having a blood test on Saturday to check for diabetes. It's his first and he's been on olanzapine for over two and a half years.

I guess my point is not everyone has those side effects.

Costello, I remember you writing this before. He is the only person I have heard of that this has happened to. I wonder what causes this?

Wish they could figure this out. It would solve a lot of problems for others. How is he doing now? is he stable? I hope so.
Thanks for this!

That's too bad. I've heard of so many people who gained weight horribly on olanzapine. I'm grateful this didn't happen to my son. I'm hoping the blood test this Saturday comes back good too. I guess he just has a metabolism or genes or something that does well with olanzapine.

He's fine. Has his own place, working full-time, taking a class to get certified as a peer support person. He says he just needs a gf to make his life complete. He still has a little paranoia and a great deal of anxiety which he's working on dealing with.

Seems to be a very effective med. When i took it there were 2 issues , hunger and increased appetite, drowsiness. I heard the drowsiness dissipates , the appetite issue and the metabolic problems are an established problem.

So exercise and watchn what you eat are very important.

But as far as i can see it does seemed to be the best med for reducing positive symptoms. ( out of the atypicals and clozapine outstanding)

ya i take light 10mg at 9 pm and have zoning out problems at 4pm to 7pm the next day if i'm out in school and i start frowning because i turn into an emotionless robot but thats quite light at 10mg... the weight gain was horrible i went up from 138 to 204 pounds now i'm down again at around 140 almost normal weight just a fraction more and i'm fine.... but took quite an effort and psychological toll... i'm fasting 20 hours most days... and i'm semi-vegan i jog a lot sometimes 15km and lift weights just to keep the weight down, coffee helps with the zoning out though... the sleepiness took quite long to wear off... almost been 5 years then only it started to wear down, not too drowsy nowadays and i can drive easily... but i'm currently diagnosed with hypomania so i don't know why i'm taking it... lol

Twice since I've been on them I've slept 17-18 hours straight. My appetite is through the roof. I'm not hungry or anything but I just really crave food.

My son's pdoc said that if he's sleeping more than like 10 hours per night, the dose is too high.

I was on it for a whole 5 days. It made me rage, and want to punch things, including people. It's the complete opposite of what it's supposed to help.

Sent from the pickle jar using TapaTalk 4.
