This is an open access article about a few people with the sz diagnosis talking about sz and stigma:

?Schizophrenia is a dirty word?: service users? experiences of receiving a diagnosis of schizophrenia

Might find it interesting.

I haven't read all of it yet cos I struggle with academic reading, but it has been my experience. I was on a course with a load of people who want to become clinical psychologists and work in mental health, and they were making fun of a guy in their halls who talked to himself, calling him sz. And I asked why they didn't want him around if they were ok working with people with sz, and they said that it's one thing working with MI people, but another thing living with them! This was around the time I was diagnosed with SZA and I just thought that they were complete hypocrites and not the kind of people we need more of in MH! And it's just frustrating cos they're the people that get really good grades and will probably get on the course, while I'm not so good but actually can empathise with people struggling and I'll probably never get a doctorate...

I'm going to read the article when I have more time, but the title of this post caught my eye. I remember going to the ER in early 2013 because of a particularly bad psychotic break and when they saw "schizophrenia" on my records they looked at me like I was automatically prone to violence and all sorts of BS. I was too ****ed up at the time to get angry about it but yeah, stigma is live and well and "schizophrenia" does seem to be a dirty word to many people still.

Sometimes I say I am SZA because it doesn't have me. I want to succeed and stay strong. Most of the time I'm fairly normal. The only time I freak out is under stress and heavy noise.
