I'm reading a book which suggests schizophrenia (and other disorders with a genetic link) can start with interrupted chemical messages between fetus and mother which results in a premature or long lasting birth (cause the baby helps tell it's mum when it wants to be born via chemicals in its brain like oxytocin)

My question is whether this is vaguely accurate within the community here, do any of you know if you had trouble being born or were premature etc?

I think birth difficulties are common, my mom had preeclampsia and they had to use forceps to deliver....

I was born at 27 weeks... so just a little premature...

Obviously things were far from straight forward being born that early...

Premature births supposedly are associated with a lot of conditions... autism, asthma, schizophrenia off the top of my head, many more I'm sure... although plenty of people who weren't premature have these problems too, so it's hard to really know what role they play.

What's the book called? I think birth complications are pretty common. But fwiw I was born 2 weeks late, but got stuck in the birth canal & went into distress, so needed an emergency c-section. Apparently both my mother & I nearly died. The Dr apparently said to my Dad "if we can only save one, which one do you want us to save?" which is a ridiculous thing to say! Luckily we were both fine, though my mum had a postpartum heamorrhage too and needed a lot of blood transfusions.

My mom drank, smoked, did drugs the first three months she was pregnant with me because she kept getting "periods". Then I was born two month and a half early because my mom decided she needed to move the fridge to the opposite side of the room while 7 and a half months pregnant. I spent the first two months in the PICU because I wouldn't latch on or take bottles.

The book mentioned that, and says a lot of what is in it is his opinions on the topics (he is a well known neuroscience researcher) and is just meant to spark discussion, and that comment jumped out at me.

Book is called "We are our brains, from the womb to Alzheimer's" by **** Swaab

For the record I was born very premature and with jaundice
