Someone told me there were blue apples at 7 Eleven when I was a kid, I'm sure they were talking about the flavor but I thought they sold literal blue apples there so I kept trying to get my mom to go there and buy me one
I didn't know what a synonym was when I was little and the teacher asked "Does anyone know what a synonym is" I confidently raised my hand and told him that it was the stuff you put on toast, (cinnamon toast ) I was completely serious , I thought he said cinnamon. ![]()

would one consider schizophrenia "special needs"? it's hard to think of myself that way but when others talk about their children with schizophrenia they call them special needs...

Plus we go through periods of remission and can even recover fully. So it’s a different thing altogether.

I don't see it as being special needs either. When I think of special needs I think of someone who has some sort of intellectual disability. Cognitive impairment is a little different, as Loial stated our inherent intelligence is always there though it may be impaired by the illness sometimes

mental illness in general... i[ve heard people call it special needs. it's weird... although it's an illness and at its most severe is hard to say for some. like those with the illness who are at its most severe locked up in psych wards. then again you hear success stories of those who thought theyd be locked up in a ward for the rest of their lives.

I see it like this, it's an illness like any other, a disability yes but some people overcome it. There's a lot of misconception about what "special needs" is and I wouldn't want my kids if I had any to be labeled as it because there's stigma and teasing that come with it. Special needs, at least in school systems is someone who needs a lot of help understanding classwork or who need someone to sit with them constantly, there's nothing wrong with it but then kids are then seen as "slow" or "weird", "stupid" etc. There was a special needs class in my high school and people constantly made fun of them.
schizophrenia should be considered as valid as medical illnesses. "Mental illness, special needs " etc created too much stigma. I have disability accommodations at my college from a letter from my doctor stating that I needed them. I don't consider myself special needs though because I don't like the term and how I've seen people categorized into it treated. Im intelligent and capable of achieving the same things anyone else is I just may need accommodations. I don't like connotations of the term of special needs, if I say that I'm "special needs" to someone they probably would see me as being lesser and unintelligent. It's already bad enough when people ask me why I am not in the room when I take tests , I feel like people judge me due to that There's always the possibility of remission

I believe mental illness is a disability when it has a grip on one's life. When I look around my unkempt room I see my disability clearer. When my friends ask me to come out and I decline, I see it there too, because I don't enjoy company nearly as much as I use to.

I don’t see most mentally ill people to be special needs. I can understand the term being used that are mentally incapacitated by their illness. I think of some of the people that are locked up forever as having special needs. But then again I don’t really see anything wrong with “special needs”.

I HAVE BLUE EYES
But I have flaws like addiction. My addiction is like "Wash down a benzo with your wine" and I'm like "Stop. Stop. Leave me alone". But the steak and beans were really good. Probably the best meal I've had this year.. |

I think all parents have a favorite, but some are better at hiding their preferences than others. Mine made it pretty obvious. I am my mom's favorite, and my youngest brother is my dad's favorite. The middle one is nobody's favorite, so it's probably hardest on him.
