I have recently volunteered to work in a museum. I was wondering if this could help me improve the chances of me getting a job.

I know of 2 people who were offered paid jobs at their volunteer places. You do a good job, they get to know you, etc etc. Of course they make you sign a paper that you don't EXPECT to get hired, but that doesn't mean THEY can't change their mind. Plus every day you are learning something new, improving your people skills, and possibly impressing someone who could use someone just like you! I am very excited for you, and plan to do the same as soon as I get MY stuff together. I went for an orientation meeting a couple of years ago, but I was too flipped out by it, I couldn't really keep it together. I think I am getting better. I will try again maybe in six months or a year and see how that one goes.

At least you could get references from such a place--and it's definitely better than sitting at home! So, I say go for it!

Yes, it will help because experience is experience, plus you are learning new things.

Most certainly it will...

You are learning new skills, and you are gaining more knowledge...

Kinda depends on what you plan to do. I'm in academia. So whether I like it or not I have to live by the rule "publish or perish". I can volunteer my butt off, but if I don't publish some research I can kiss any jobs goodbye.

Also, "volunteer" is such a broad term. Doing what? Technical stuff? Cleaning? What did you do? How long? Did you have a mentor? Are the skills you learned applicable in another setting?

There are so many questions that go along with your initial question. Do you have a CV? What kind of jobs are you applying for? If you want, send me a PM and we can talk more.
