Hi everyone,
Here's a bit of my school history first. I dropped out of school at 15, when I started doing drugs, I've been in and out of school ever since, but never finished high school. So that's what I'm trying to do now, I enrolled in an online school for my high school diploma, so I can move on to college courses and perhaps get a job. My problem is that I can't seem to find any motivation to complete my modules and finish the course. They've given me 3 years to complete it, and I only have 3 months left with 31 lessons to complete and I have no motivation at all! I know I need to do it, I even go so far as to open the modules, but I can't focus on the lesson and I just end up putting it off for another month or so but I'm running out of time! My question is, how can I motivate myself to do my exams? How do I get over the fear of getting a bad exam result? What are some studying techniques that I can do to keep myself doing it regularly? Thanks!

You can go at it several ways, whichever works for you! Think of pride you'll feel or regret whether you complete or not, break tasks down into manageable chunks, just start doing the work, like NIKE says, just do it, baby steps, whatever. Also consider a timer maybe, and a timed and reasonable reward system for yourself, and maybe work on the drug situation. If you have an appropriate friend or fam member you can confide in, to foster encouragement and accountability. In any case, I wish you the best!

The trick is to stay really focused while looking ahead at the same time. Don't even "care" about the results of the tests, just get to where you are going to take the "next" one. Assume you will do fine on it and pass. This 3 months and the horrible/boring work will be over and you will be on to the next thing.
Worries are about the future and the future can go either way. I remind myself of that often so when I "worry"/am anxious, I can decide I might as well make up a good result as a bad one. Instead of worrying that someone who is late has been in an accident and is in the hospital, I decide they won lots of money and are filling out the paperwork to get it ![]()

OMG I can really relate. I tried doing this past semester online, and it was a mess. My grades suck, I am completely unmotivated, etc. I think online school is so much harder than normal school. I suggest finding a study buddy- having someone to work with and keep you company can improve things drastically. I also suggest tutoring, even if you don't need it, just so that you can have some interaction with someone who also knows the same stuff. It really helps to just get other people's input and see how they do things. It helps give the course a little variety.

What you need to do now is take a one-day rest. Sleep all day and clear your head. The next day, that's when you go on your studying. You still have 3 months right? Try to manage the 31 lessons. You could do 11 lessons in one month then 10 lessons each on the other two months remaining. Just remember to list down all the important notes (learn to take notes) so you have your reviewer. This is what I usually do sometimes when I'm in rush. I would make my own reviewer each lessons I take so when exam week comes, I am ready to review everything. Just remember when doing this, you have to be attentive on your teacher. Take time with rest. If you feel lazy, go with it. Spend the whole day being lazy. Tomorrow, decide to study again and get on focus. Hope this helps ![]() |

(((stizXstones))),
What you have learned to do in your past is "not complete" and instead to "avoid". Your psyche is somehow convinced that you are unworthy of seeing something "through" and you will simply not "do well". You are not the only person that struggles with this challenge either. You need to "know this" about yourself and make a commitment to finally just bite the bullet and keep going forward. Once you get to a point where you learn to "beat" this kind of psychological conditioning, you will truly feel better about yourself overall. You need to understand that you will not necessarily have to really "master" and "exceed" at everything you learn either. Our brains hang onto whatever we need to compliment our genetic talents. You need to be patient and do the best you can at learning so you can get to a point down the road that you have enough knowledge where that time comes where you finally discover what you really want to do in life. You need to simply give yourself a push past this old behavior pattern that never really worked for you. You are not alone in this challenge either. You have been circling around the pool and just dipping your toe in and maybe just getting up to your waste. It's time to get into the pool and swim around and finally realize "it isn't so cold or bad, it is actually quite pleasant. OE |

What is the worst-case scenario if you don't finish the courses or fail the exams? Sometimes pondering that scenario can be very motivating.
Congrats on starting the process to turn your life around, seriously. Now, follow through. |

Concerning studying techniques I suggest starting Habits, rituals, you know. It always helped me a lot to have a certain beginning and a certain end of studying. It is important that you establish a border between work and your leisure time. For example take a shower before studying and work out or play computer games after studying, so that's what I did back then. On the one hand a goal in terms of a certain time, on the other hand in terms of a certain reward.
