What online resources do / did you use for GRE verbal?

I haven't looked for on-line sources. I am interested in helping my son. I did find a box with cards of many words and their definitions which claimed to be the words which are sampled from by the GRE. I got it used. Alas, I can't remember what company made it. But it might be worth a search.

I had a college prof tell me that the best way to improve vocabulary and writing skills is to read. Just something to look at.

I do read a lot, Jeff, but want to strengthen the specific vocabulary tested on the GRE verbal so I need the right sample that Payne mentioned. |

I agree that making your own flash cards will help. I am curious about this issue, so I think I'll do some research on it, too. I'll let you know if I find anything useful.

i know this isnt much help, but when i took my gre, i had those flash cards payne talked about and that is all i used, but there was a web site i accessed pretty easily, dont know what it was, but they sent me a gre word a day via email. think it would be pretty easy to find if you googled it. i didnt pay for it. i know i just searched for practice gre material.

My question would be more on how the test is being administered. When it was on paper, it was section by section, all questions were predetermined. when they computerized it, they started making the next question you saw dependent on your response to the previous one. Which I personally think sucks. I dont think you can quantify a given grammatical construct algebraic equation as more difficult than another - what if you just cant remember it?? Like You're just blanking on it? By old standards im a genius- by new standards, im an idiot.

I took it in early 1990s on paper. I now have both options. I assumed that I would take the computerized version because I hate filling in the ovals, but now that you have mentioned the difference... food for thought. |

I don't think it is harder/easier hankster; like you say they couldn't do it that way as you can't decide what is "harder" to an individual. It may have seemed harder to you but not to me, etc.? I would not worry too much about vocabulary/individual words this late in the game; I would learn Latin and Greek "roots" so I could figure out some word meanings (as it is verbal "reasoning") for those I don't know. You have to figure out which word is "bigger" or opposite, etc. English teaching worksheets: Greek and latin roots

I have never heard of this test. I'm curious why you are interested in it. (None of my business, I know.) Going back to school, or helping someone else who wants to go to grad school?

There are two sections; the first whole section is "average" difficulty (based on all the people who have taken the test, what's "average" for them) and then the next section you are given is easier/harder so it's not just one question and then the next question is harder/easier; it's "type" of problem. If you can add 2 numbers okay they give you 3 but if you don't do well on 2 they ask you, "what number is this"

I got a 93 verbal 94 other part equaled 97 percentile overall in 1989. When I got fired and thought, hey part time tutor! In 2003 my scores were too old, so I took the test COLD , off the street, literally, and ona computer, and scored in the 60's!!! They couldn't shoo me out of there fast enough - for either of us, im sure! But im thrilled now to have a place where I know people who feel my pain ![]() |

It's the Graduate Record Exam, like an SAT for regular graduate school. The GMAT is for business graduate school, LSAT for law school, I think MCAT? IDK.

I actually took a class titled "Greek and Latin elements in English" but it was almost twenty years ago. Time for a refresher. Indeed this is the most efficient way to kill as many birds at once as you can. |

Considering going back to school (PhD). I actually helped others get into B-schools by teaching GMAT prep, but GMAT is easier - it does not test raw vocabulary. GMAT verbal is about sentence correction, grammar rules, and all of that. It does not test the command of unusual vocabulary of Greek/Latin origin. That is what makes GRE harder.

The first time I took the GRE in 1973, I had a massive nosebleed and was terrified they'd see and make me leave so I didn't do very well on that I don't think :-) I retook it in the mid- to late-1990's and did okay, I'm sure my scores are still around here somewhere.
However, when I went to grad school, I went to my alma mater that didn't require tests, went on grades/success in undergrad school and let you "try" grad school if you wanted, provided you had graduated undergrad. I think I would go to a school like that, get the good grades and then "transfer" :-) if I did not want to continue at such a place. But, for a doctorate, the requirements are often a bit different, for many one has to have an advisor who'll take you before you get in, etc.

I used quizlet and studyblue when I was taking my GRE. I have provided a sample link below
GRE 2013 Vocabulary Hit List 1 flashcards | Quizlet I would study online and then write the words on flash cards and tape them around the house. I also did that with math formulas, problems, etc. for the math portion.

Guys!
Girls! I have GREAT news to report. No, I have not aced the GRE. I have not started prepping yet. Actually, I have been an insomnia and a migraineur suffering since yesterday night with absolutely no sleep. So, trying to kill time while feeling the pain, I logged onto OK Cupid. AND! What did I find there? I found this: "I like your answer on making love versus having sex", wrote a guy. I have no memory of the question. I got curious. In trying to go to the questions, I incorrectly pressed on the tests, and found this little nugget (I must have taken this test without realizing that I took it because I do not remember taking it). "Your result for The Commonly Confused Words Test ... English Genius You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 87% Expert! You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go! Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it! For the complete Answer Key, visit my blog: The Commonly Confused Words Test - Answer Key. from the dating site! " NOW. I want to be exempt from GRE verbal. I want PhD programs to start accepting OKCupid's results ![]() |
