Can someone with experience opine on this please; If you started and took your September 2014 disbursement, which is part of the 2014-15 award, can you transfer and resume your remaining award at another community college and if not, why not, it says you are entitled to use your entire pell & stafford award, right, why do I get confusing (foggy, gray) answers when I ask this question, some schools say yes, some say no, who knows for sure, what is the big deal here?

You should be able to transfer it (that's what I'm planning to do), but why not just ask the school in question? They'll know more than we do. If you're getting mixed replies from schools, that may be because different schools have different rules about mid-year transfers and financial aid.

Colleges get different amounts depending on their studends' needs and have some leeway on what is awarded so if you are changing schools, like xRockettex says, there might be different rules. Talk to your new school about what you would get from them, they would be the only ones who matter.

It may be possible, but it's not a given. Where I went, the sooner you applied after the financial aid deadlines, the more money you got. I agree with the other posters that talking to the school you are transferring to is the best bet.

I thought students were due what they were awarded no matter what, so if they were awarded a certain amount of Pell grant, and certain amount of Stafford loan, for example, that was their award, and the school was just a fiduciary so to speak, the school is not loaning you money out of their pocket per say, that's why the different answers confuse me. I have to pay back the loans, the pell is a grant from the federal governement and so I don't see why it should be up to them. I guess I am mis-informed or something. The one counselor said to me, you know they are giving you money, I said no they are not!

It might have changed since I went, but the way I understood it was that schools were given a certain amount of money to divide amongst their students. Someone who came in after all the money was passed out might not get much.
Pell grants specifically are a special case - those should travel with you to the new school. The people at the new school should help you figure this stuff out. |
