I have a degree in psychology. I didn't get it because I was planning on going into anything psychology related, I got it because it was the easy way out (and because I really do like psychology)...but I just applied to a job where I could use it, so we'll see.

I don't have a degree in psychology, but have always been fascinated by the mind, brain, intelligence and behavior and studied it for several years in college after switching to psychology from physics (way back in the day ... 70's) focusing on child psychology and thinking of getting into the therapy or experimental field....but when was on the verge of completing the degree ... about 15 hours or one semester left....I suddenly realized that if I was really serious about it I'd need to go on and get a masters or PhD. I became discouraged and dropped out.

A few year's later after moving states and pursuing my other interests - science, electronics, etc. I went back and spent several years going part time and got an Electrical Engineering/Computer Science degree.

A while after that (as always still interested in human mind/behavior as I am now) I took the gmat and enrolled in graduate school in psychology.....but again dropped it after a few classes.....

I have no expectations of returning to school but am still fascinated and enthralled by the mind, brain, and behavior. I've retired from several decades of a Computer Engineer career and am now pursing another dream of being a poet and writer.

Enjoy!

KennyC- I just looked at your artwork and it is absolutely incredible! Perhaps when I feel like reading, I will check out your writing and poetry.

I started out in psychology until I found out that a bachelors in social work would cut my masters in half! Luckily, my classes did fit in certain needed areas....

How many people
I study psychology too, and I'm going to start my last year. I didn't know yet to have a disorder when I choose this field. Actually I don't plan to become a therapist (working with sever disorders would be probably too much for me), but I'd like to work with children, for example with learning disabilities, or children that show some signs of problems or are 'at risk'.
I don't know well the difference between Psychology and Social work, because here where I live we don't have this distinction...some people tried to explain me, but I didn't understand well however

Basically, with a Master's in Social Work you have broader career options. A Master's in professional counseling gives you only the option of being a counselor.

I see people here with enthusiasm and saying that psychology is their calling...I had that enthusiasm and happiness too when I began university, but now I'm worried to be losing it I still like it, but now that I'm near the end of studies the fear of not being able to deal with people (I'm shy) and help them is overcoming the enthusiasm...

I have the same fear of not being able to actually deal with people and help them. I eventually want to counsel, but I'm just not sure I can handle it. Maybe I'll end up changing my mind about Social Work. I'm just not sure.

I'm most worried about not being able to pay attention to my clients talk about themselves for almost an hour because of my ADHD. I tend to zone out a lot, and a lot of times I don't hear what people are saying to me. I'm also really bad at hiding my reactions/judgments, like, my therapist said you can always tell what I'm thinking by looking at my facial expression. Apparently I'm pretty expressive without realizing it.

I've self taught myself some psychology solely for the sake of learning to influence and manipulate people better. I'm also considering getting a college degree in persuasive psychology along with a MBA in order to become better at influencing clients/customers in the business world.

Psychology for the sake of being a psychologist? No thank you. Too much work and not enough of a reward for my interests; degrees in business or even a Bachelor's in a technical field pay more in a fraction of the time that it takes to become a psychologist.

I'm also afraid that I won't be near enough recovered from my mental illness when it comes time to put my social work degree into practice. I mean, how do I treat a patient if I'm hallucinating during session?

Yes, probably for us it's more difficult to work in this field, though there are also advantages...Hope that it will go well, for all of us.

In your country how do you become an art therapist? With a degree in psychology or with a course all about art therapy?

In undergrad, I'm going to be getting a Bachelor's in Psychology and a Minor in studio art, and a certificate of Trauma Studies.

Grad school requires I apply to an art therapy program at specific schools. There are only a handful of schools in my country that offer this type of program. It is a 3-year program.
