So, first of all my room is a mess. Papers everywhere and nothing has a place. Another stressful thing for me is that nothing matches! The furniture doesn't match and it stresses me out a lot. The curtains don't match either.
This sounds very stupid. :P I also have a stuff that I don't want and I don't know what to do with either.

So um... Anyone have suggestions?

Dear me! I am not an organized person! Best to make a list breaking down the cleaning/ organizing into small attainable tasks. Try to cross one off the list a day...if you don't get thru a whole task hey you still made progress move it to too priority to finish first...next day. As far as your mismatched furnishings... if you have one item that you do like, try to set a theme/ color scene around that piece. If you are crafty go to a fabric store and get some upolstry tacks and mix and match textures, comfort, patterns and colors to your hearts desires...if not... check out Christmas tree shops, job lot, and ikea for inexpensive slip covers, throw pillows, and bedding. For small decorative touches that depends on your style all the above stores and tjmax Marshall's and home goods have good finds check the clearance first Curtains can either be bought at the same places as slip cover n the like, but thrift stores are also a great place if you don't need too many curtains to find really cheap sometimes unused curtains! Especially if you just want something simple. Weird Bodega like dollar stores always seem to carry a wide selection of curtains as well idk why also thrift stores are great for lamps as well. Happy hunting! And Good Luck!

What helped me was to get a couple of tall bookshelves and it didn't happen all at once and I'm still working on it but it's a lot better to at least get things more organized. You can find some cloth bins to store stuff you don't want to look at. I have found some decorative things at the thrift store and have given them all the good stuff I couldn't use anymore. If you have big things you can't transport some charity stores will come and pick them up.

Oh and Lost in the Woods you are right about curtains, a couple of times I have found some I liked for just a little money and hemmed them up to fit my windows. Table cloths are easy to find too. I made a corner table for magazines, etc out of a couple of large bins stacked on top of each other with a nice table cloth.

I've been wanting to get a book shelf for a long time but i'm not sure what to get, a white one or one that matches my other furniture?

There are so many ways you could go! White might be a nice contrast.

When I bought my first house... Oh boy did I have lots of mismatched furniture LOL.

Depending on what your furniture is made of there is of course using the " distressed" look . Or there is always good old paint.

My daughters first apartment was a tossed together mess lol ... She really played it. She loves all the different looks and finishes. I think it looks wonderful.

As for organizing ? My golden rule is once everything is cleaned and organize .. anything you bring in needs a home. Mail can be gone through as soon as you get it and toss out junk stuff the garbage. My shoes and purse are put right away , My purse is always hanging on the inside my closet .

Good luck
