Last week our internet was down for an evening because the router broke. I'm currently obsessed with a show on Netflix and so it was really hard to go without watching it that night. I have gotten into a routine of getting home from work, eating a quick dinner, then vegging out for the rest of the night binge watching a show until I'm falling asleep. It's been really nice the past few weeks because I just started a new job and this has been a way of comforting / relaxing me. However, that night without internet really opened my eyes to how much time I actually spend on TV.
So I'm going to try giving up TV this week and see if it improves my mental health / well-being / life. I'm sure there will be pros and cons that come up so this is my mini experiment to see what those are.

Hi,
I will be moving in Sept, and will be w/o tv and wifi for a bit. I too, know that I am watching way too much tv, and on the internet way too much. I will use this opportunity to make some changes in my life, I hope............ Either that or I will go "bonkers" without it. |

Interesting thread. I waste too much time playing games on my iPad. I'm aware of it too...I come home, sink into an arm chair for a couple of hours, get up, cook dinner, then back to the chair. Not healthy for me. I wish you luck!

I am guilty of this as well I get off of work cook dinner, and watch a show although I will mix it up with books in between. It is just my form of relaxation I'm going to try a gym though maybe that will help me.

It's been a little over a week and at first I was REALLY bored! It's hard to think of things to do that match the relaxation level of TV for me. I ended up reading a lot, started learning a new language, and cleaned the whole house from top to bottom. So that leads to my pros and cons list...
Pros of Quitting TV I have so much more time. I can focus on other things. I am more productive. I felt a lot better about myself because I am not comparing my life or my body to the actress' on TV. Cons of Giving Up TV It is missed dearly. I can't stay up to date with everyone who is watching TV on the latest developments in shows. I forget the day of the week easily because I don't have certain shows to look forward to. It can be replaced with other unhealthy habits like too much internet, video games, sleeping, etc. Life can be less relaxing if I don't find an equally satisfying source of entertainment. So there you have it. I skipped TV for a week and felt a big hole at first, but as I filled in the gaps with other things to do I found I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed them. Overall, I have learned that there is a place for TV in my life and I can still watch it from time to time with this is mind. No need to be extreme here! I think I will pick a few favorite shows to follow and watch an episode 2-3 times a week.

i hate when the internet goes down- sorry you had to go through that... it's happened to me too, and trust me if it happened to me, you'll know about it i'm not sure if i could give up tv- their is so much stuff i watch, and so many movies i enjoy i think if i gave up tv, the danger is being addicted to the internet and all the streaming sites such as amazon prime or netflix. |

I could actually see that happening to me, I have an addictive personality period. So if I have no tv, and no wifi..............what the heck will I get addicted to instead........lol.

if you're asking which ones i'd miss, 1. benidorm. a life without benidorm is not worth the living (such a funny commedy!) 2. wayward pines (i actually love it, didn't think i would, but i do) 3. family guy (can never stop watching that!) 4. south park 5. the chase (okay it's only a game show, but it's still really good!) isn't mr robot about someone with social anxiety or something |

I gave up TV a long long time ago. It was painful at first but I don't think I could have done anything better to enhance my life.

Yes he has something along those lines, but I'm not exactly sure what. I love his perspective / thoughts on society. And can relate to his social anxiety. It's a really good show. I'll have to try out some of your shows!

Giving up TV for me is kinda easy but I don't think internet will be much easier. Perhaps, I need to focus first on other things to lessen those habits.

I think the TV and internet go hand in hand. I am okay with giving up TV because I mainly use it as background noise to fall asleep to. If it wasn't for my friend I wouldn't watch it at all. I enjoy TV maybe 2-3 times a week, but I have been noticing that when I get comfortable (no matter what time of day it is) I fall asleep.
