About 3 years ago I self harmed quite badly and needed hospital treatment.
Instead of stiching my arm, they used this type of glue instead, which made the cut heal quicker, but now I have absoloutely no sensation on my scar whatsoever. Also, since Ive had the glue put in, everytime Ive selfharmed since then, even the tiniest shallow of cuts, they always scar quite deeply. I was wondering if anyone else has had to have the glue used on them and if they've had the same trouble with scaring? |

Welcome to Psych Central. I'm glad you found us here. There are lots of wonderful people here.
I don't have an answer to your question. I wish I did. Maybe a google search would help with your research. Ry

Fellow cutter here. not having feeling where the deeper cut is is natural. Basically you cut through the skin layer into the nerve and pigment containing layer. The nerves (which let the brain know things like touch) are damaged and nerves do not regenerate after damage. Regardless of treatment used on the cuts this will always happen when cutting to this level. The amount of scarring depends on the ammount of damage to the area. It doesnt have to be deep just the method and way. if there is damage from bruising and so on to the surrounding area that may result in added scar area to protect that area from harm again. Also if you are cutting in the same place over and over again you are cutting through the original scar tissue and then into the under area so to repair itself there is scaring on the under area and then on to the scar. So then you have two layers of scaring theen you cut again there another scar layer is added I have one spot on my arm where I cut so much there that if I do again I will be cutting bone for there isnothing left but the scar layer and then the bone. I prefer using glue over stitches. Glue wears off where as stitches need to be removes, stitches create larger scar area because they have to be anchors in the good flesh areas where as glue just covers the cut area no need to peirce good flesh for anchoring. Also glueing does not need to be done in a hospital. I can super glue on my own saving myself megabucks in doctor fees, ER fees and so on.

Thanks for all the replies
![]() I did this cut with a broken china ashtray and its 7cm long and 1cm wide. They used some special glue to put in it and it scabbed over for about two weeks, but before then I'd never heard of the glue method. I have never cut over this scar as its a constant reminder to me of how close I came to fully going over the edge. I have cut near it in the surrounding areas though. But my question was has anyone else had this type of treatment and have they found that when they have cut themselves that the scars are more prominent since having the glue put in. I havent tried googling this question as I have no idea what the name of the glue was that they used. ![]() |

Yes Ive had doctors glue my cuts thats where I learned how to do it and no the cuts are not more promenent with the glue for me they were less promenent. Thats why I prefer the glue over stitches.
. Cuts done with a china ashtray are going to be naturally more promenet than a razor or knife because the cuttling edge of object used is more promenent. A razor or knife blade is thin whereas broken china or glass objects the cutting is centimeters to inches thinker. |

i use super glue, the normal type but i have learned that there are specialits glues also, used by hospitals, the only differance i have learned from 18 years of cuttings is that glue closes the wound quicker than stiches, either glue, and you dont get the dots where stiches were applied, it takes longer to heal if you make a fresh cut over old, for your own sense of safety keep a tube of the glue, readily available at most stores, at home, the only time you have to go to ER is when you cant stop the bleeding, if it gets that far call 911 or 999 in the uk, if it is minor use the glue but use a matchstich or cotton bud to apply, you dont want to stick your fingers to your arm, leg or other body part
good luck, also i is a yorkshireman, true, so i know what i am talking about regarding the nhs |

Ooops - thanks for your replies guys - but I think I need to explain better at what I meant. Since I've had the glue put in, any other new scar are more prominent now - meaning that even if I accidently get a paper cut - it will scar whereas before I had the glue put in, it wouldnt have scared

One of the first things I ask when recieving any new treatments is what are the side effects and so on, The first time I had the glue instead of stitches I was 8 months pregnant. I was told The gue that professionals use has been tested for toxic chemicals and does not absorb into the body. It drys within seconds and wears off with the normal skin daily as dust and dandruff. It would not affect my baby or me in the presernt or future for there is no way that it can "travel" to other locations and is nontoxic.
I have noticed that at times when I am anemic and or my other vitamins and minerals are off or I am dehydrated it affects the rate that I heal from bruises and cuts. I still have a dark scar on my ankle from when I cut there 2 years ago. My physician says it will never change. Its like that because at the time I cut I was dangeriously anemic and so on so the new skin cells could not grow at the rate they normally do. It is also like that because it is an area that the cut kept getting irritated from usage - putting shoes on and off, rubbing up against things when I walk and so on. Talk with your doctor. he probably has a tube of the glue so that you can read the labels and the pamplet that comes with the package and he will better be able to answer your questions as to the glues absorbsion and side effects. |

You can get a cut anywhere else and it scars worse than it used to? That is strange.
Anyway, if it's any help, the name of the glue is Dermabond.
