Why are you being home-schooled, and how long has this been the case?
Have you gotten therapy or skills-training for your learning disability?

tomboy, how do you feel about hearing your mom and some of us saying that you need to do more for yourself? Things like:

~find a ccounselor
~investigate therapy for your learning disability
~find at least one social activity outside the house for you to go to

Could you do any of this on your own? With us to ask advice & bounce ideas off of, whatever?

What about returning to school? Could that be considered? What would be the pluses and minuses of that idea?

Do you have a medical doctor you see? And sixth grade was awhile ago. Might school be reconsidered? They've come a long way in treating learning disabilities in that time.

tomboy, try hard not to say no without really thinking things over. Just because something hasn't worked before doesn't mean it's not wroth trying again. You're in a bad situation so we need to rethink all possible answers, okay?

I agree that sixth grade was a long time ago. Sixth grade does not prove anything about right now. I wish that you could have more contact with people outside of your home, particularly with adults who can help you and will want to help you.

It is good that you want to meet kids and are working on a plan to do that.

Please consider, though, that school might not have to be as stressing as it was in the past. It might be possible to be in a less stressful environment.

My suggestion is to inquire what it could be like in a school in your area, and how school can help with your learning disability. Have you been tested to assess how you best learn? Such tests would help the school decide how best to help you.

Do you ever have contact with anyone at a school? If not, how does the school know that a homeschooled student is making good progress?

Thanks!
Thanks for this!

tomboy, even if your mom doesn't have time, I think it's really important for you to follow up on some of these things that Bill has brought up. A very important issue is how you best learn.

It may be that these aren't required tests, but they are available now. Wuold you be able to call the school sys and find out about when and how you might be able to take these tests?
Thanks for this!

I agree with Roadie here. You can't depend on your mum to just do all of this for you. From what you describe she seems quite unwilling and a bit controlling. Take some of the control away from her and give it back to yourself. It's your life and ultimately it is up to you to be in control of.

The sort of things I'm thinking of are more evaluations than "tests," really. These aren't the sorts of things you pass or fail or get graded on at all. They are used to figure out the best ways for you to study and learn.

I don't think there'd be any trouble with having enough time.

Tomboy, if I understand you correctly you are saying that a person can be allowed to have extra time on all of her tests in school if an evaluation done by a professional indicates that the extra time is warranted.

Children live up to or down to expectations. Your mom won't let you do anything and then she wonders why you aren't doing anything.
