Generally I have two modes of self harm: I either use a pin to scratch up my skin or I punch things, such as the wall. I only do it when I'm in emotional distress...last day was Monday because I wasn't calming down and couldn't breathe properly...
But the thing is I hate doing this. It makes me feel like crap. So how do I stop? I've tried just not doing it and ignoring my feelings...and that just makes me feel so much worse. I need help with this. I want to be the person my friends think I am, I want to be strong. Last edited by notz; Jul 27, 2013 at 11:08 AM. Reason: added trigger icon for mention of si methods |

Lilium, self injury is a complicated issue. Dealing with all the emotions and thoughts is tough to do on your own. Do you have a T.? I hated myself after I self injured too. I don't know what the answer is for you--we are all different. For me, I had to talk about all my pent up emotions (with a safe person). Once I started talking and learning better ways to cope the self injuring lessened and then went away entirely. Please get help--you deserve better....D.

Getting help is very important. If that is not an option, just talk to a close friend. There are also many things to do instead of self-harm. Some people recommend distraction. I personally think putting ice cubes in my hands would work better, as this hurts, but it doesn't do any real damage (Note: this is an in between step and probably not healthy as a long-term solution). Also, don't carry around SI instruments with you. This means if you suddenly get the urge to SI, you'll have a harder time finding something to do it with and this pause could be enough for you to think, maybe I shouldn't do this right now. I wish you the best of luck and hope your problems get easier.

Something that helped me was journaling instead. Write down how you feel and why you feel that way. Also remind yourself who else you'd be hurting and find a distraction when you feel like doing it. List reason why you want to stop and give yourself a little reward for making so many days. That is really what helped me. Also find some one you can talk to because that will really help. Even if it's some one you talk to online. I wish you good luck on your journey.
