I am in DBT. I have been trained on a few skills that do work..... Distraction, breathing, imagining yourself in a safe place, etc.
Yet - sometimes I just don't care about that stuff. Sometimes I CHOOSE to cut. Tuesday was several hundred cuts, today another 700+ Anyone else like this?? Where you know something that works but just stubbornly continue to SH |

Sounds like you need to work on what pain is causing you to cut.
I have had counseling and made the choice not to listen. I now regret it, just like the counselor said I would, so yes, i know about the be to stubborn to listen. When we are ready to change we will make the right choice. Best wishes on you healing. Maybe more DBT training will help you find the right solution.

I actually do that sometimes. Sometimes I force myself to SI. I know what coping mechanisms might work, but I don't do them, and I try to trigger myself. So I can see where you are coming from.

Are you in one on one therapy? It has helped me a lot.

i think MANY ppl here are in therapy.
but yes - I have THREE shrinks.... one for meds, one for DBT and one just to make sure my savings doesn't grow too much. |

Why do you choose to do it? There has to be a reason for it. Can you try and determine what that might be and bring it up with one of your therapists?

I do not know why I do it - and honestly - if I knew, I probably would not want to tell my shrink cuz i would not want them to "take that away" from me. I think cutting is kind of my security blanket.

Your therapist can't take that away from you. Maybe they can help you to find another security blanket and way to self-soothe.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hello and Good Evening. Yes, gotta totally agree: I could easily not self-harm, but I WANT to, sometimes I can easily stop and it's not a problem - other times I have no intention of stopping myself. It's almost as if it's 'my' thing, it's something I've done for ever (feels that way, I'm old!). It's serves an important purpose after all, it's simply ''mine''. It's private and always has been, I can infact even 'look forward' to my 'thing'. When I particularily hate myself, it's the ONLY thing that punishes me enough, nothing's as good. Yeah, as I said - it's ''MINE'' and nobodies stopping me. HUGZZ and LOVES, as ever. xxxx |

Nothing else works. Cutting is cutting, you can't substitute it with anything else.

Sometimes I think F it - I'm just going to do it - yet always there is another part of me, asking myself what on earth am I doing and how weird it is to want to do this to myself and what is it that I really want and I can choose to do otherwise.

I have given up quitting. I don't see a problem with doing it. It doesn't hurt anyone else, only me and I'm ok with that. Actually I like that it hurts me.
So I do stubbornly continue and have no plans to try to stop. It's as much a part of me as the color of my eyes. |

Trust me, it doesn't matter who you tell, the decision will always be yours. Unless you have no money to buy something to harm yourself with IF someone had been able to take everything around the house that you can use. People who cut can use lots of things. You do have the control. The choice is whether you choose to do it and nothing else.
