what is your diagnosis.
I always thought SIB was for borderline personality people. Just recently (through getting threads deleleted and offending others) that people with depression also engage in the behavior. I engage in SIB for numerous reasons. Will go into detail if asked to What are you diagnosed with and why do you hurt yourself |

SI is a coping mechanism for me. My diagnosis is GAD, dysthymia and bpd. I am really struggling with hurting myself right now. Feels out of control.

Hi there.
People self harm for a number of reasons. It's true that a clinical diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder does list self harm as a criteria. But self harm can exist as also it's own diagnosis and exist as just a coping skill. Millions of individuals self harm. The reasons behind that are varied across the board. Hope this helped clear some things up for you |

I first starting SI as a way of coping because my world pretty much flipped upside down when I was 14. When things are going bad I still turn to SI to cope at 24. I use it as a form of release, otherwise the negative feelings just build and build and I get overwhelmed. I also use it to prevent myself from doing anything worse.... |

(Tried to post this yesterday but site was acting up.)
Hi there. I'm diagnosed with Schizotypal & Dependent Personality as well as depression/hypomania/adjustment disorder. I usually self harm out of frustration (the biggest trigger) but sometimes I just kind of do it to zone out or to focus or something?) I usually don't know why on those occasions but i'm starting to think on the not frustrated ocassions I do it (subconsciously) to feel something. Sorry your threads got deleted. Nope, no borderline here.

I was diagnosed with depression, an impulse control disorder & a mood disorder. I self harm for several different reasons such as punishment, to feel numb, extreme boredom, emptiness, to feel better... Sometimes I don't know why I do it. I've done it even when I was happy.

I began self injuring as a way to protect my family at age 3. Sounds strange, but I'd hurt myself to get my dad's attention off which ever family member he was going off on. Once his attention was on me then he'd be angry with me and he'd beat me instead of my mom or siblings.
As I grew up, the SI became a coping skill. I have done many forms of SI. Cutting started when I was 13, and eventually it took over and became my main way to SI. I have been diagnosed with attachment/abandonment disorder, dissociative disorder not otherwise specified, depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorder, and a few others are being questioned. As someone else has already explained, anybody can SI, you don't need to have another disorder to SI. I have a friend who SI's more frequently than I and she has no mental health disorder, it is just how she learned to cope and now it has turned into an addiction. SI is actually considered an addiction. This was a good question. Thank you for asking it. Be safe, Celtic Last edited by celtic.starlite; Aug 29, 2014 at 10:12 AM. Reason: typo |

SI is a coping mechanism, an unhealthy one to be sure. I have depression and anxiety.
