Ive been sat here tonight, googling self injury (LOL, I know, but it makes me feel better about it and the more information I know about it, the more it helps...)

and Ive noticed that there are websites where people dont know %#@&#! all about it. Seriously, i was getting worked up before reading some of the descriptions about it, and I know that you wouldnt completely understand what it is until you have a problem with it yourself... but some people are absolutely clueless. It annoys me how the topic of SI seems so taboo... it seems different to other sddictions, like alcohol/drugs/gambling, but for some reason Self Injury is a shocker to everyone

I dont actually know the point of this post, its just a bit of a rant really

i just took a big step yesterday and told my closest friend here that i've been started on the same meds she is on and that i self injure... she said she bites her hand... so i showed her my cuts... she said "oh, cat scratches" nodding, like everyone has 10-15 cat scratches all in a row on one's arm. i answered "razors", and the subject was dropped.

I think self injury raises many questions about someone's behavior that needs to be answered. The first question is why the person has resorted to SI instead of drinking, drugs etc.,

SI has been linked to a higher risk of suicide. Most people assume then that anyone that SI's is depressed and/or suicidal. That is not always the case.

The more education people have about SI the easier it will be to recognize this behavior and offer help.

I know... I've written papers for class on SI (even when I was actively SIng) ... you learn a lot. But someone needs to teach some people about the best way to respond. I think SIng seems different since all the pain one experiences is externalized, than with other addictions. Just my thoughts.

Sorry - I don't see the difference between SI and drinking or drugs - all harm the body, and drinking/durgs call kill just as easily, or slowly kill the liver.

psychris... i kind of agree with kiya... but i am not sure that you were saying that drinking and drugs would be a better choice...just that some people think that... am i right?..i am thinking about what you said about suicide and part of me agrees with you... i do get to that really dark place... to be honest i am there right now... where i have to remind myself that i don't really want to die... but i don't want to live either... not to upset anyone... please know... i am not going to act on it... just saying that is where i am at present... and i plan to share that with my t tomorrow... in the past when i cut... it would keep me from getting to this place ... i know that sounds off... but it's the truth... that is why when i feel myself slipping into this place ... i think the urges get so strong... when i cut it numbs me and i can just go away for a bit... and not feel the fear and panic... ironically.... sometimes it's enough to keep me safe ... i am trying to find new ways to get out of the dark... but the urges are still there...lyn

I think the difference is that SI is a direct attack on and intent to harm the body. Most people use drinking or drugs as an escape (which SI also is for some) but most people are not directly intent on harming their bodies with the drugs and alcohol. Of course, they know the dangers and do it anyway, but the intent is different - escape but not necessarily bodily harm.

I think it scares people in part because we are doing things to our bodies that are meant to hurt, that leave scars, and it is hard to comprehend what could possibly motivate someone to do this.

I don't know...just my two cents. I mean no offense to anyone.
