It's the half term and I stay up because I like speaking to a person I like. I go to sleep around 6am or 6:30am and I wake up 1pm and I then keep sleeping. Today I woke up at 4/5pm. That's like 12 or more hours of sleep. Isn't that dangerous? I'm not depressed... Maybe my body needs more sleep as I'm a person who needs like 8/9 hours of sleep to feel alright. When I'm half asleep in my bed, I feel like I need to sleep. Maybe it's time to wake up earlier with an alarm clock which will wake me up but I will feel so tired. anyway thanks for reading

Hi happycheeks,

I too sleep irregular hours, sometimes many more hours than I think I may need. As I've been sleeping in this manner more recently, I'm fairly sure it's due to my own depression and grieving. I'm not implying that's what you're facing, but I wonder how old you are, if that's okay to ask. You'd mentioned you're on break from school, so that is why I am asking also. Do you feel okay otherwise, i.e. are you in good health and reasonably active?

All the best to you.

I'm 18 years old. I feel like my life is boring at the moment because they're not much to do. It might be because I've been bored or feeling down. I'm in good health though.

Glad to hear you're in good health, happycheeks. At eighteen, you're still growing (I know, sounds goofy, but it's true), and your body may require extra rest some days or for certain periods of time. I was extremely active when I was in my teens, with heavy participation in extracurricular activities in and outside school, maintaining a high GPA, applying to universities, working two jobs, and shepherding the youngest in our family. There were days, when my schedule permitted, that I'd sleep twelve plus hours, much to the chagrin of some family members, who'd had the nerve to infer I was lazy (?!?). If your sleep is not interfering with other important aspects of your life at the moment, then get the rest you need. If you feel well otherwise, again, get the rest you need.

What do you think you could do to alleviate the boredom you mentioned?

That's a tad redundant. If that's your answer, then I'm not quite sure why you're so concerned about potentially excessive sleep.

Best of luck to you anyway, happycheeks.

Do you think maybe you are too drugged up from your meds? For six years, I slept 12 out of 24 hours. Don't know about you, but I don't think it's a healthy thing to sleep your life away. My sleep patterns are all messed up right now....sleep 4 hours from 8:00PM-12AM, stay up an hour, then get up at about 4:30AM, but I'd prefer to do it like that than the other way. IMO.

Thank you for your reply I don't take medication. I sleep 10 hours or more because I stay up when I don't have college. I understand that I shouldn't sleep my life away.

I can relate! I slept constantly for a few hours each night, but on the weekends, I slept anywhere from 8-12 hours (I would wake up, close my eyes, and BAM! It's 3 hours later.) I had a crazy headache each time, but I was what I called "pretty depressed" then. I find this to be normal though, I think.

I'm no doctor, but I think this is just you wanting a little more sleep, that's all. I'm compelled to say, though, that you should try not to make a habit of sleeping so long. For me, I overslept, had that headache, and was upset that I was sleeping my day away when I could have gotten work done. That's me though.

As for oversleeping being "dangerous," I don't know. Interesting to point though. I'd like to find out for myself!

Take care!

I get blocks of 2 or 3 hours at the moment , = can we arrange a swap ?
No seriuosly the type of medication I take has a big influence on my sleeping patterns. Im not sure if 10 hours is a bad thing, might just mean thats what your body needs. I guess it depends on how you feel when you are awake.
when I was on meds that made me sleep heaps I think for me the sleeping was an escape mechanism, definately check with your doc maybe even get a second opinion from another doc.
have a happy day

I'm not sleeping 10 hours at the moment. I have college and I can't really sleep 10 hours. I only sleep 10 hours when it's the break. I agree sleeping is a escape mechanism. Thank you You have a good day too

happycheeks just want to let you know that I too sleep 10+ hours. I go to bed around 1am and get up with my daughter at 7:30am. I take her to school then go back to bed, if I am not working, from about 8:30am-2pm. And after all that sleep I am still exhausted. I am even exhausted if I don't go back to bed, so I don't think it is from sleeping too much. Some people need 8 hrs of sleep, some need 10. If you are really concerned about it, talk to your doc.

I know exactly how you feel happycheeks, I go through the same thing and im not on meds or anything either. I love staying up half past a monkeys butt talking to my boyfriend and the sleeping in till noon or later. I just had to start limiting myself and telling him when i got tired at night and then just setting my alarm for 830 or 9 so i could be tired again by night time.

That's like me too. I talk to someone I really like and I stay up late.
