Make sure that you have a set time that you go to bed, so that you train your body to know when it's time for sleep. If you have difficulty getting to sleep, try brain entrainment (those audio files that stimulate certain wavelengths of your brain; for example, to get into the perfect wavelength for deep sleep you would stimulate your delta waves). If that doesn't work, maybe consult a doctor about sleeping aids. If you don't sleep a lot you are more prone to nightmares as well. I don't know if this counts for everyone but I've noticed that the less I sleep the more I get nightmares when I do eventually sleep.

Sleeping is very important in recovery from bipolar/depression and those types of diseases. As a matter of fact, if I do not sleep over several weeks, I am guaranteed to have a relapse. I think all holistic methods are good (exercise, meditation, etc.) but until they do, you might want to try a good sleeping pill prescribed by your psychiatrist. One caveat, make sure you ask about the side effects. Meds such as ambien do more harm than they do good.

Dear WhisperFades,
Tryptophan and vitamin B6 are natural sleep aids. I recommend you try 50mg of vitamin B6, about an hour before you go to sleep. This vitamin can be found in almost any supermarket, pharmacy or health food store; it is inexpensive. If this doesn't work, consider adding 500 mg of tryptophan, an amino acid, a constituent of protein, also readily available. Please see my response to the following post for more information: http://forums.psychcentral.com/showthread.php?t=78287 I wish you the best, Larry |

In my physiology class, we talked about how sometimes you have to reset your circadian (sp) rythem thingy....like what nacht was sayin I think; one way to do it is to go to bed at like 4pm, get up at 11am (8hrs) then the next day got to bed at 5, get up at ten...and so on until you are on a normal sleep schedule;
also, make sure the temp is comfortable, no tv, no lights...can't remember what else messes up that cycle. nightmares though...check how you are handling stress and life events..do you have a good outlet? That's justa theory...your excess worries are bing dealt with in sleep, but I am not knowing. I know people who are being badly triggered can also have nightmares. Take care, -kayo |

Dear WhisperFades,
I would just get the B6 to start, and see how it works for you. Remember, just 50mg tablets not more. Also, any inexpensive brand will do. A generic vitamin, such as this one, is made by a small handful of companies and packaged by many. The store brand will be just fine. Larry |

Dear Whisper,
The warm milk, is a really great idea. The warming of the milk, cooks the protein in the milk, making the tryptophan, in the protein, available for absorption. A glass of warm milk, would be perfect to take with your vitamin B6, about an hour before bedtime. I wish you the best, Larry |
