so i believe i have written abou this before but i want to know if it ever happened to anyone else. so i had recurring dreams when i was about ten or eleven. and a few montha ago i got a text from a number that i didnt recognize, saying the key points of those dreams and to help them. my heart immediately dropped and i started crying. i thought it was one of my friends ****ing with me, but i never told a soul about those dreams. and i moved around a lot since i had them so friends were limited. but this person found my cell phone number THROUGH HIS DREAM that was the SAME EXACT ones i was having when i was little. i asked the person questions about the dreams that only i would know, he got them right. he knew everything, ad were back in contact again because since hes older than i was when i had them, theyre troubling him more. but i remember them being petrifying and id wake up almost having a heart attack. oh and by the way he lives in california, i live in massachusetts. so...my question...how the **** did this happen?? and has anyone else experienced this?

Wow, that really is weird. I have had the experience of having the same dream as someone else and also of having someone know the content of my dream before I told anyone, but never anything as dramatic as your experience.
Can you share what the dream was? Is it something that could have actually happened in real life that you are both dreaming about because you both experienced it? |

That is quite simply odd.

Wha??! That's so strange! I've had a many times with few people that can relate but for him to see you're phone number in his dream is solidifying that dream travel CAN occur. I had a psychic tell me that my reoccurring dream of visiting my friend (who had passed) was me "switching universal planes" and that in fact the conversation I had with him was indeed REAL. I don't know how true that is but with what has happened to you I'd believe you're a dream traveler. Do you maybe have SOME sort of relation to this man? Maybe even somehow passed him on the street in real life? There's got to be a relation other then just the dreams. Please keep us all posted on anything new; I'm very intrigued by this!

@pgrundy: it was a dream of a man in a white suit and tophat, driving up our driveway (in each dream apparently) and setting my house on fire, (smelled of fire in his dream) smoked cigarettes, i made the other person guess what car the guy drove, got it dead right. i remember it so well i found the model of the real car. year and everything. but the man was harmful to both of us and very terrifying in the dreams. the other person has also manage to know i was a female, and that my father was a cook. this whole thing still stumps me. its just so out there! and ill keep you guys posted on any other updates or questions!

that first text i got that i mentioned literally said "man. white suit. tophat. help" and my heart sank cause i hadnt thought of those dreams in years and i knew exactly what he meant. he was asking for my help to understand the dreams and to maybe make them stop. and apparently the more we talk, the easier the dreams are to understand and deal with. were figuring out other things along the way

Hmm. I wonder if the man in the white top hat is the dream traveler?
Another possibility is dissociation--the possibility that you actually know these people, all of them, including the top hat guy, but have blanked that out somehow. It's almost easier (OK, it's a lot easier) to just believe it's some kind of dream travel or dream intrusion. I believe that people can enter other people's dreams, but we live in one of the rare cultures where this is considered impossible. Most cultures take it for granted that some people can enter the dreams of others. That's what shamans do, but there are bad shamans, like, witchcraft shamans. They do exist. The white top hat guy could be stealing energy by generating fear. He could be a 'psychic vampire' type. If so the key would be to train yourself not to feel emotion during these dreams and incidents--finding a way to mock or laugh at them is one good way, but I'm not saying it's easy. Also if it was me I'd ask the guy who sent you the text a LOT more questions. He initiated contact, so I'd ask him why, WTF, etc. Weird. ![]() |

But I dont know who the dream traveler is in this situation? Ive tried getting myself to dream about the man in the tophat again, by saying it out loud before bed, repeating it, but I just cant seem to have them again. Maybe when I forget about it again for a while? But that doesnt help at all damnit! haha

Please forgive me if I seem cynical or judgmental as that is not about to be my intent... I just simply don't believe what you said is possible without a logical "solidified" explanation.
Is it remotely possible that you have had some incredibly traumatic experience early on in your life and are now suffering from dissociative multiple personality disorder? You may be aware of a trauma or abuse that you suffered but you may not be aware of the having multiple personalities that you developed to protect your fragile psyche. If that were the case then your other personalities are capable of doing things without you knowing it. Such as texting you from another number somewhere or paying someone to do it and you wouldn't even know it. I heard that this is an extremely rare condition. It just seems more plausible than a complete stranger tapping into your dreams, seeing your phone number, and texting you with explicit details of your private untold dream. If this is the case then it begs the question why is your other personality trying to communicate with you. Maybe the dream is really a bad memory that needs to be dealt with. Maybe you should see a therapist. |

The bad memory could be a connection but this in all honesty sounds nothing like DID. I can see how people could possibly suspect an alter ego doing this but typically with DID you do not communicate with someone outside of your body the communication is all internal. The alters, the beings are internal, not imaginary friends that stand at our side. At least not in any case I've heard of. Granted alters may be able to stand next to the body on rare occassions but that doesn't qualify others as DID because they are speaking with someone that could possibly not exist. I'm pretty sure that would fall along another line.
It is however possible that this entire thing could be somewhat mental, repressed memories and the man who has been in contact somehow was connected through the man in the top hat... Who knows really. But DID isn't like it's portrayed in the movies and to assume it's DID because they may possibly be dillusional in thinking that the other person is there communicating is not very productive. DID is too quick to be used nowadays when in reality it's nothing like most people think it is. I get both dillusions and I have alters, sorry if I myself sound judgemental or condescending but in personal experience as well as information over the years given by therapists as well as pdocs, this would not fall along the dissociative spectrum, unless there is something I'm missing here...

Dissociation can involve time distortions and memory problems though, so it could be something like that--not DID, but some sort of dissociative distortion of a specific nature.
Like, for instance (maybe, just one possibility) the man in hat dream might feel like a memory of an old dream but isn't. Could be a real past experience or a screen memory for a real experience, etc. Weird stuff like this happens with alien abductees who don't know each other. I'm not saying I understand it, I'm just saying it happens there too. |

Lordy lord, I used to dream of a man in a top hat. He would appear at my bedroom window when I was a child. He scared me lots. The lights in my bedroom would flash on and off, as would my alarm clock..

I know its a bit freaky and scary when that happens but what happened to you is very common. let me explain. I read these and other boards / websites and sometimes something someone writes sounds like something I have gone through, or something I like or it will remind me of something else I had read or heard somewhere. when that happens I copy a sentence that felt familiar and paste it the search. then click the go arrow. that brings up every single thing that has ever been wrote the internet by anyone for ages. you end up with billions of results that contain that sentence. even things that have long since been deleted off websites because of something called "cashe" its some sort of computer thing that automatically keeps a copy of stuff people write on the internet. plus there's all kinds of ways on the internet to search for people and disclose who is who on the internet, in your town, whos caring for children you name it. there's a search for disclosing any person place or thing you are looking for on the internet. sometimes those people are frauds, fakes, scammers and sometimes they arent. not too long ago someone from another website tracked me down because they were having the same problem I was having a yr or so ago managing work and PTSD issues. what this person told me could have been my life and my problems. like you and this person you have been contacted by there were subtle differences like different locations, different treatment providers but esentually the problem was as identical as it could get. I didnt remember talking to her, I didnt remember posting anywhere about this subject but when she talked to me she told me how and why she found me. I used her same steps and low and behold my first post on this long forgotten website from a few yrs ago did indeed tell briefly about this situation she had found me to talk with me about. Commonalities on the internet and off - it happens. look at how many people post here on psych central. though we are in different locations its not unheard of or strange for members here to have the same problems in sometimes the most uncanny identical ways. when this happens its called De Javu. everyone goes through it on and off. in either case when this kind of thing happens to me I remember the internet is a very big place and has no boundaries. I also keep in mind that I dont remember every single person I talk to over the past couple yrs. My suggestion explain to this person you are uncomfortable having contact and then call your treatment providers and talk with them about this. they can help you to ensure your safety, well being and can help you figure this problem out in more detail and closer than we online can. we can listen and suggest but only you and those in your off line life can do anything about this. |
